Guess what the growth means

Can you guess what happened to this upflow scrubber? This is the only picture ever found like this, so it's certainly unique, and you'll need to have some experience with scrubbers to be able to guess what the different types of growth indicate. Try to guess everything that could possibly be involved. This upflow scrubber was hand installed by me, in a known environment, so the events that led up to this growth are known exactly. All guesses will be compiled and posted so you can see what everyone guessed, and then I'll pick the most accurate one.

Best guess, something happened to the bubbler(didnt get cleaned maybe? This is a HOG scrubber, no?) then the light cooked the algae?


Or the sump went dry, and the light cooked the top portion of the algae? Reason the top looks cooked, and the bottom is still green.

Ha, no nems here. And upflow designs on the glass can't get closer to the light.

It has a bubbler, but nothing happened and it kept bubbling.

Neglect. The top holes got plugged and it developed an air bubble causing the top portion to die and slime over from the moist air. The black on the bottom is caused by high nutrients from the dead algae on top??

it looks like it was damp and not completely submerged. Those look like mushrooms/fungi and I get some on pieces of drift wood that jutt out of my freshwater tank.

Looks like somebody forgot to harvest and fried it with way to much light.

The flow was turned off but the light wasn’t?

It looks like the operations department failed to harvest the algae for a prolonged period of service causing the algae scrubber to grow towards a algal climax community. Didn’t they know that they were supposed to harvest the algae to export nutrients regularly?
