I recently took the plunge from freshwater to marine. I have a ten gallon tank with about 1/2 inch or arganite, and about 4 lbs of live rock with a powerhead in the tank which is attached to a sponge filter. For lighting, I have a 96 Watt 6700 deg K CF light that I used to use for a freshwater planted tank. The tank is stocked with a blue damsel, and a blue legged hermit crab. My question is what I should do next. Which would be more effective: A protein skimmer, or more of the live rock? Which skimmer would be a good one to get, and what would be a good source of live rock. There are so many different kinds, and I don't konw the difference between them.

Typically, we like to have at least 1lb/gallon of live rock in the tank to support the bio load. That way you can get rid of any 'man-made' bio media in your filtration. The problem arises that your tank is already set up. You will probably need to 'cure' your live rock in a seperate container (rubbermaid) to make sure there is no cycle upon addition. In a 10g tank, a skimmer isn't really needed. If you keep up on your 10% weekly changes, you'll be fine. www.premiumaquatics.com has nice live rock. If you can get it locally, the curing process will probably be shorter. ;)
