Guide to setup a Quarantine Tank (QT).

i agree with above statements. i would definitely leave DT fallow for 10-12 weeks (longer the better). I would also remove all fish from DT and place them in QT/HT, and due to sensitivity of wrase to copper i think hypo would be an excellent choice.
for hypo make sure you have a well calibrated and tested against standards refractometer.
If you need help with step by step guide i did write one and its posted here in my blog. i 'll see if i can link it here for you.

Good luck and let me know if i can assist you any more.

I plan on getting a Tomini Tang tomorrow.
I have a permanent QT, 20 gal.
I don't have any tangs and have only treated other fish with Prazipro as recommended.
My LFS treats all his tangs w/copper and Prazipro. He has had this fish for 6 weeks or so.
I plan to QT for 6 weeks but should I treat with Cupramine and Prazipro or just observe because he treated ?
I was also thinking on getting a Coral Beauty and will be QT'ing together. Can you copper treat with the angel ?
Thanks for the help

cupramine is mild and coral beauti might handle it or you can do hyposalinity.
I personally dont count on someone else doing the qt/treatment so i like to do things myself in front of my eye in my tanks but that just me. If you trust the LFS with their treatment then just observe for 6-8 weeks. if their treatment fails u will see signs of ich within that 6-8 week time so u can treat again if not then u are good to go.
Good Luck

I am only getting the tomini tang because the angel would give me to many grazers.
I always QT myself, I just don't want to OD the fish on copper if that's possible because I know the LFS treats. He also said to treat with something else because Cupramine you have to get the exact dose or it does nothing and too much can harm the fish. He mentioned some product that didn't sound like a copper product.

I have a tail-spot blenny in QT for the last week and a half. I haven't done any treatments, since I've heard blennies have a good slime coat and aren't prone to ick.

Got her from Live Aquaria.

Thoughts on treating her with Prazipro prophylactically? She seems healthy so far.

Prazipro won't hurt anything. It's mainly for internal parasites. Might make qt water milky but normal. I generally don't qt such species due to fact u mentioned above.

would you ever run chato in hob filter on QT?

or do more harm then good with putting a light over hob filter for chato

for a 24/7 QT

You don't need chaeto in qt. It won't do no good might hurt in long run. Only purpose of chaeto is to exp O rt nitrates which is not a concern in qt or fish.

K I will pull it.

I placed a sponge filter in my sump for a month or more, for future use in QT.
I think my sponge may have to much nutrients in it.

showing nitrate, nitrite levels.

I have had this QT set up and running for two months (month since last round of QT)
Friday before i picked up fish I did a 80% WC
got levels and temp to where it needed to be, added sponge filter. added fish.
next day reading nitrates. did 50% WC, and same thing when tested next day

so have been continuing to do large WC every other day. but hard to keep medication levels right.

The last round of QT the sponge was not in the sump near as long (use new sponge each time to not introduce copper to DT)

Current QT fish are two square back Anthias on a 20 gal long (fish are aprox 3" long)

nitrates are not an issue in fish as long as they are under 100ppm. I wouldnt worry about nitrates in qt. if you are treating for ich with copper then definitely dont do water change till ur treatment is over as swing in copper levels will throw the treatment off.

Blennies can and will get crypto if exposed. I would not cut short your QT just because they are less susceptible.

Main Tank

Main Tank

How long after you got all the fish out to QT you let the Main tank empty to let the Velvet cycle out?

After I break a QT down to disinfect, is there anything to do with the ceramic media? Can it be disinfected? Or just trash it?

I personally never take down the qt. Mine is permanent and runs 24/7. But in between fish I do 100% water change and rinse the ceramic media in saltwater to rid debris.
If you are breaking ur tank down for a while then just rinse the media and leave it to dry over time. It can be used again after weeks of drying out. Will need cycling again.

I've got a pair of clowns in my QT since yesterday. They seem to be doing well and eating quite a bit. I have two questions:

1) I'm using an AquaClear 70 (QT is 30 gal) with 2 sponges that were in my DT for 1 month. Not using the borings that come with the unit. I'm testing daily (no ammonia yet), but I didn't add prime. Should I? My plan was to do a 50% WC once I see measurable ammonia and try to stay on top of it using WCs.

2) The LFS had the clowns in copper for >2 weeks (I tested a sample of their water using salifert kit and it was 0.4 ppm copper). In this case, can I get away with 2 weeks in my QT or should I stick it out longer? I'm treating them with prazi Dr. G's medicated caviar now (just in case, no signs of flukes/worms).

I don't want to rush them into my DT to end up in disaster, but the LFS has a helfrichi fire fish that I fell in love with and I'm paying $2 a day for them to hold. Maybe I'll buy another QT.

Hi
i am glad to hear that your qt and 2 clowns are doing well.
That is good news along with the news that ammonia is not in sight thats even better. I would not worry about prime till u notice ammonia. or better yet do water change at that time.
I prefer to so water change than use chemicals. just my personal thing.
I understand that LFS qt and use copper which is very good but 2 weeks is not good enough for ick. i would qt atleast 4-6 weeks more leaning towards 6.
prazipro is fine to use it wont hurt anything.
You can get the fire fish and qt them together with the clowns. 30gal should be able to handle all those 3-4 fish with ease. Remember the qt clock starts the day you add the last fish. Another thing that i would put a screen cover on the qt as fire fish are suicide jumpers.
Good Luck and i hope i answered everything. if not please feel free to add.

Hi, i am about to setup my first QT tank

48x13x16 breeder
korila 1500gph pump
aquaclear 70 with two sponges
fluval e200 digital heater
canopy glass cover
instant ocean salt (aged 24hours)

since my dp just started i do not have access to established tank water, so my qt will have new salt water

my lfs made me buy some chemipure to add to the filtration and some instant ocean BIO-Spira Saltwater Aquarium Bacteria

now is this good? when will i be able to add my first fish? am i missing anything ?
