The reason Americans are fatter than Brits is simply because our food is better. 
So we eat more of it.
Curbing consumption wouldn't have done anything to prevent this spill. 43% of the oil coming from the of Gulf of Mexico was exported in '08. Americans may consume too much oil, this spill happened though because about half of Americans believe that business can effectively regulate itself. BP said they didn't need to take precautions against this kind of thing happening and Americans elected policymakers who took their word for it. Unfortunately we reap what we sow.
