Gutted out cadlight 34g

Got a cadlight 34g and realize I didn't like the whole refugium setup taking up 1/3 of the tank, so I decided to gutted everything out. Also sold the lights, skimmer, etc.. that it came with. Going to be running a Geisemann Infinity and possible the new, not yet release, ATB HOB skimmer. Pics soon.

I got my CADlights 34 in September and had them drill it on the bottom so I could run it to a 20 gallon sump/refugium. The overflow box is in the middle - I like it alot this way. Good luck with yours.

Hmmm, so you threw away the lights, the skimmer and the built in filtration. So in essence you paid $800 for a 34g tank?

Why not just get one custom made for you instead? Probably would've been cheaper.

Did you even read his post? He changed his mind about it after he already bought it. And he didn't throw away the stuff he didn't want, he SOLD it.

Thanks uhuru. Migston, I actually traded some corals and a small amount of cash for the tank and also the lights. It might have been cheaper to go the custom route, but the tank just looks so nice. I also didn't throw away the light and skimmer. The skimmer and light actually cover the cash in the deal. So I came aways with a cadlight for some corals. If you can tell me you got your 12g aquapd for free, then we can talk. Otherwise keep checking back when I update with new pics.

Sure I read the post. My point is that those Cadlights are expensive because they include a refugium, lights and a skimmer. He could've saved money by just buying a regular tank.

no uhuru -

I am using the skimmer that came with the tank - it's a Finnex and I have it in the sump. I hate this skimmer and hope to replace it when I can afford to.

Hey,
I bought a 34 gallon tank and stripped it as well. The guy I bought it from had tried to drill the back false wall and ended up breaking it. So I bought or actually traded for it and tore out the rear chambers. I added an overflow box but it doesnt go to a sump. I run a CPR HOB fuge, the medium one and I run a Fluval 405 for my chemi-pure, carbon, phosphate remover or what ever medias I decide to run at a given time. No sponges in the fluval. I do have the pura filter pad in it though. Also in the overflow box is my heater and probes for my RK2 and the supply pump for the HOB fuge. I run 2 tunze 6025's in the display. Im waiting on the new Hydor controllable power heads to come out. I am also running the stock 34 gallon 150 MH with 2X24 T5's light from CAD Lights still. I have been trying to decide which light I want to go with. I was waiting on the new PFO Led light to come out but I have read some reviews that are not so promising. I was looking into the Geisman light myself lastnight. Oh yeah I run a Tunze 9002 skimmer in the HOB refugium. Works out well.
You are in for a fun project. If I can figure out how to post pics I will.

Good luck.
Jason

Jason- Looks like I am not the only one. Post pictures here if you can.

I will be posting some pics after I hang up the lights and add some water. The tank will be a mix reef just like my 65. I am going to be fragging most of my larger cherry pieces and growing them in my cadlight.

Who cares what it costs...its HIS money, not yours. I just wanna see pictures.

The point of my posts is to serve more as a suggestion for other people reading this forum and not necessarily the OP himself.

I know that my words won't do anything to bring back the OP's money but it can always serve to warn a newbie reading these boards from wasting theirs. So the moral of the story is, if you plan to DIY a lot, if you want a sump or if you have a list of dream lighting fixtures and skimmers, you can save money by not buying an All in One.

That said, based on the reactionary nature of the responses to my posts, I'll respectfully withdraw and not hijack this thread.

Back to the topic. Gutted everything out, removed the silicone, and black out the back and bottom of the tank. Got a couple big pieces of rock and did some aquascaping. Should be adding water this week and hanging the Geisemann Infinity fixture this week. Still waiting on the ATB HOB skimmer. Pictures coming soon.

How did this go? Any pictures? Any recommendations for placement of overflow and size?

I am about to gut mine out and add a sump to it. Did you drill a separate hole for the return and the overflow? Ideally I would like 3 holes, one additional for an emergency overflow.

He was banned years ago (hence the "Moved On" status), so he probably won't respond. You could try googling his username to see if the thread continued on another reef forum?
