H. capensis premies born last night!

My male H. capensis popped out 2 premies last night at around 10:00 PM. I'm so excited. They can't swim, hitch, or even get off of the bottom, but they are breathing, and occasionally will swim a short burst, then get exhausted. They are about 1/4", but still have the yolk sac attached. I'm so excited!!!!!!

I was inspecting the underside of his tail, and I think I scared him. he did a "tail crunch" and 2 babies popped out.

Ah. I dont think I would be brave enough to handle a pregnant seahorse, especially one as pregnant as this guy must have been. I trust there was a good reason.

So, how are the premies faring?

I was trying to inspect his tail, because, as you might know, he has a pretty bad tail infection, and I was seeing if it was going away. I also wasn't 100% sure he was pregnant, and I thought it might be gas, so I wasn't really assuming babies to come out, lol. Dan told someone that the males do this accidentally while shifting the broods around.

I never heard of the h. capnsis until you mentioned it. Is it true that the seahorse species is the rarest in the world?

It is not the rarest.

Not the rarest, but it was the first to be put on the endangered species list. Ocean Rider sells them as "Zulu-zulus" or "Zulu-lulu" or something like that.

Kevin, what is the rarest species? Maybe the pygmy?

If I knew how to post pics, I would. I would not recommend capensis to anyone honestly. Unless it's someone who has years and years of keeping seahorses, and treating tail infections...oi...
