H. crispa or H. malu?

I recently got this anemone that was labelled as a sebae. I can't figure out whether it's an H.crispa or an H. malu.

As you can see, my baby black and white occellaris pair (pic only shows female) took to it in about 5 seconds


Any help would be appreciated.

Not sure what it is I am not good a figuring out what they are. But it looks pretty hungry. The short stubby tentacles gives that away. Feed him small meaty pieces and he should look much better in no time.

If it was a Malu the tentacles would stay short, correct?

Until it is fully settled in, fed well, etc. IMO/E you won't get anywhere near a definitive answer. Let us know in 6 mos. to a year . If it is worth anything, my initial thought is H. crispa, though. I actually think H. malu is a bit rarer than what many people think.

the malu has less tentacles on the oral disk like that one also those look like healty tentacles not short starved tentacles malu

Actually, I feed it quite well. It's been eating a scallop every two days and the food dissapears very quickly. It's also expanded much larger in the last week since I got it.

Based off the pattern of the oral disk and the verrucae, I am going to put my money on H. Crispa. The purple tips also hint that is H. Crispa even though some Malu have them too.

At this point you can throw most field species indicators out the window. Tentacle density, shape and length will vary based on the health of the individual.
I'm with Amphiprion in saying that I don't think malus are as commonly imported as some articles imply.
For the most part, if it does jump out at you and scream malu, then it is probably crispa.
It is good that it is eating for you. I hope it continues to do so. You may not see a dramatic change in its appearance (more and longer tentacles) for several months.

Janina, how long long have you had this anemone and what type of lighting is it under?

Phender, I wouldn't completely throw out the species indicators. They are still of some use just not 100% efficient. The verrucae of Janina's anemone matches my Crispa's almost identically.

Sorry, I forgot to say that I think that it is H. crispa. I must have been very tired or in a hurry.

I meant throw out the indicators that would differenciate between H. crispa and H. malu, not things that put it in the genus Heteractis. Again sorry, totally my fault.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. I was also leaning towards an H. crispa. I've had this one for about 2 weeks I think (it's so easy to lose track of time these days ).
It's currently in my 12 g nano with 72W of PC lights. I think if it keeps growing and expanding at the current rate, the tank will quickly becomes a species tank and then totally outgrow it
