I just got a 55 gallon tank that currently has live rock, live sand, 3 blue/green chromis and a damsel (which I will soon be getting rid of)...I am looking to buy a couple of seahorses to put in the tank. I really want to get the hippocampus erectus zebra seahorses, does anyone know of where I could buy them for a decent price? I have been searching forever! I would really appreciate the help!

Well, H. erectus and zebra snout seahorses (H. barbouri) are different breeds. I would recommend getting rid of all other fish and going with a seahorse only tank. Chromis are fast moving and aggressive eaters, and they'll stress out horses. For buying, I think Seahorse Source is the best around. Also, you may want to leave the tank fallow for a little while to make sure diseases that the fish may have carried do not transfer to very disease susceptible seahorses. Lastly, either bleach the live rock or very carefully check it for anything that may sting, such as aiptasia.

If you're referring to the true H. zebra, you'll have to settle for looking at photos. They come from a very few locations in Australia, are very rare, and these "secret" locations are highly protected. They also aren't EZ to keep alive for various reasons.

Some sites now are calling the "lined seahorse" a "zebra lined" seahorse. Very confusing to us that have been around awhile.

I am guessing he means erectus.

Although if you find zebra's PM me (and not Greg) and I will buy them.

Oh JEEZE...I guess it's called "salesmanship" by some, even if it's kind of a stretch. I guess that's like all the "deepwater" coral and fish that get a few bucks tacked onto their price. I've seen this done with a few lionfish and scorps, and I say to myself "oh MAN...here comes more species confusion".

I guess P.T. Barnum was right...

You can have the zebras, Kevin...we have enuff "special needs" fish...like ALL of them! :p

My tanks are to easy. After I get a good plumber out here all I will have to do is move my magnet across the glass every few days. I am fairly automated these days.

I hope to have a floor drain and a sink in here by the end of next month. Won't that be awesome :D No more carrying buckets, but just flipping switches.
