H. Magnifica vs. F. Occelaris

I just introduced a H. Magnifica to my 190. I have a pair of clowns hosting in an RBTA on the other side of the aquarium and they have a clutch of eggs that are about to hatch.
This Mag is over a foot across and the female clown went straight for it and started ripping tenticals off of it. should I catch and isolate her for a while or do you think this behavior is temporary and will stop after a while?

I think it is temporary and will stop after a while. Gary, you have never had a clown tear off some tentacles of your anemones? My clowns did that to my anemones a little bit. They have stopped doing it now. If your anemone is healthy enough it should be able to handle anything the clowns do to it.

I am surprised your occleris didn't imemdiately leave the BTA for the mag. My bet is that they will. My occs will not go near my BTA although the previously hosted in a mag and a carpet.

Actually, the tank where the ocellaris pair is doesn't have a BTA in it. That pair live in two H. mags. A long time ago, I had my female ocellaris in a tank with my RBTAs and she did go to them, but ocellaris seem to be attracted to mags like magnets. She was much less enthusiastic about the RBTA compared to the H. magnificas. I started off with the RBTAs because I wanted to quarantine her before adding her to the tank where the mags were. H. magnifica is a natural host for ocellaris and boy do they love them.

I'm sure when your ocellaris' eggs hatch they will abandon the BTA for the mag.

Oh yeah!, she wont even go near the RBTA anymore and its only been a few hours,,, she moved out of the Apartment and into the 3 story Mansion.

lol. So she abandoned the male to tend the eggs over at the RBTA? I guess you see what her priorities are. lol

I'm pretty sure that my female Ocellaris did the same thing to my H. mag after I initially added it. I never caught her doing it, but there would be bits of tentacles floating around and I assumed it was her. I recently posted that I watched her eat a chunk of tentacles that got ripped of an E. quad that got stuck in a closed loop drain. I think that this is pretty interesting behavior. I'm beginning to think that it's the way that they "test" a possible host for suitability.

yeah they male is on the other side of the tank by himself. but the intersting thing is, last night she went back and slept with him in the RBTA, next morning she was right back uptown again

They are both in the Ritteri now

In the pic, the one under the anemones looks like a true percula and the one in the anemone looks like an ocellaris. Is it just the lighting or do you have a female ocellaris and a male percula that spawn together?

That is correct Gary.. However I thought the female was the true perc,, I bought the male as an Ocellaris. But yes they have spawned regularly for about a year, I have only raised one batch and sold most of those , but i do plan on doing it again soon,, they babies have very nice markings.. the one I kept is about a year and a half old. i will try and get a pic of him.

I'm really bad with a camera and this guy is hiding on the backside of the aquarium in a GBTA.. to me he looks more like an Oc. than anything, they had a very unique look when they were

maller.. sorry about bad pic

I'm not sure why I assumed one gender was the male and the other the female, I just thought the one under the ritteri in the earlier pic was a percula. Pretty fishes. Interesting pairing. I knew those two species sometimes paired up. I assume they are very closely related.

where did you get the mag and how long have you had it?

From a LFS, only had it for about a week, but it has great color, has not moved and inch from where I put it, eats good, has a nice tight mouth when not eating. every sign points to great health. so i'm optimistic he will be just fine
