haddoni fish killer?

I have a 120g reeftank with a dsb and 12bulb t5 fixture the tank itself is new (to me) I moved my live rock from my 75 I had for 2-3 years and the 120 came with liverock that had been in for over a year aswell. I have some experience with bta's but didn't like how much they moved around, and I really like the carpet anemones. I love the hadoni carpet but I hear horror stories of them eating fish I saw one where a blue jaw trigger was consumed.. ( i have one and love it... alive) are they really that bad about eating fish? Would a hosting pair of clowns make it less likely for fish to get close enough to be eaten? i know my maroon wouldn't let me get ANYWHERE near my gbtas could this deter fish from bumping into it? Would I be better off going for a gigantea? ideas insights thoughts concerns experience all comments welcome.

I've heard of one case where the haddoni actually ate a clownfish, but that's not very likely. Haddonis have been known to eat fish, especially gobies that lounge around in the bottom of the tank. The bigger they get the more likely they are to eat something, so keep yours (if you decide to get one) fed.

so if they are well fed they're less likely to go munchin on my fish? correct?
I was really hoping a pair of defensive clowns would help aswell..
plus I think I might set it on one side of the tank. so its should get less travel around it.
are some of the other carpets a little less likely to eat fish..
I've heard the gigantea are but I've heard they're also a little harder to take care of in a tank.

I have a S. Gigantea and my clowns won't let and anyone go near it. Especially now that they been laying eggs lately. But keeping them fed like I do once a day brings happiness to everything as I have seen him try to snatch snails or anything that venture into his realm area

I've heard gigantae r harder to keep... I thinl from my understand ing. Their light needs are higher anyone with any haddoni experience? Id love to keep a blue haddoni and Not have my fish eaten

An S. Haddoni being well fed or not will not change the chances of it eating a fish or not.
IME, having a pair of defensive clowns actually INCREASES the chances of the S. Haddoni eating a fish -- the clowns can/will attack other fish, those fish will, in turn, chase the clowns back to the anemone, the fish will get too close to the anemone..... Speak from personal experience on that. In fact, in my 58 my dwarf angels no longer spend any time near the S. Haddoni now that I sold off the pair of pink skunks that were hosted by it. Prior to that the clowns would do exactly what I described above -- that is how I lost my Golden dwarf angel.

Yeah I thought the a well fed anem is a well behavegd one was too good so the clown might be a bad. Idea .....well I. Reallly really want some kind of carpet any success stories

I think tank size is a huge factor in how many fish a haddoni will eat. I was reading a thread on a different forum about people having them with no problem in larger (125+) tanks but small tanks are a problem. Ours went through a pair of ocellaris, a 6 line wrasse, small yellow tang* and something else I can't recall right now. However, ours is also in a small (40 gallon) tank as the only real "feature" to the tank so the fish didn't have a ton of room. I think the key is to give the fish PLENTY of space away from the haddoni.


*No all the fish were not in the little tank at once and the 2" tang was going to be temporary.

well my tank is a 125 and its going to be to one side in a corner basically well close to it...

I'm just trying to decide if I should get the clowns wiht it or go with like. a sebea or a gigantea my friend has a sebea in a 75 with a tomato with NO problems and the clown chases things away from it

With my previous post, I mean't feeding made it to where snails were not getting snatched along with anything else due to feedings. As far as Todd's feelings with defensive clowns. Mine keep all the fish away and they don't even consider going near it due to them. Its really a chance and not a guarantee as is anything with this hobby when it comes to a nem eating a fish. I feed mine daily along with the fish and I think that it helps as it seems to be always ready to eat at that time of the day. I think that as long as you don't have sand dwelling fish and you don't overstock or do a real heavy bioload that you would be alright. Also from what I have seen reading hundreds upon hundreds of carpet nem posts, its always the haddoni that seems to be eating fish and not gigs so much............................. just my .02.....

i like the tentacles on it better honestly.
do you think my lights could handle the gig though?
I know they're more needy on light intensity.

If you have a Haddoni in a tank. Don't put any fish in it that you cannot loose.

It really depends on Your fixture as a cheap one wouldn't, but a tek fixture or something nicer with individual reflectors would handle it good

yeah its got individual reflectors. I think I SHOULD be fine but I hate loosing stuff.. killing things and throwing away money so you think it should be ok?
I could place it nearer the top on a rock really easily.
And s. Gigantea is better about NOT eating fish thats the general consensus correct?

and ofcourse lots of flow. Im about to drill my tank and throw in a huge dsb/mud scalerpa fuge so that will add more flow and I'll get an additional powerhead and one of those wave maker surge strips


Also Whats a good place to order good specimen online? I always hear of people getting theirs in bleached and near deaths door.. I know shipping stresses them out but I've also seen how some pet warehouses keep their nems.. and I could see that being an issue aswell..
if I had my druthers I'd ruther get one thats not brown not dying and not way over priced.
