Haffs09 370gal Tank Build...Finally!

man that is a fantastic tank and stand.

i say screw the reefs and collect a bunch of nice butterflyfish and angels like chris campbell.

Thanks for the update Haffs! What camera you shooting with? I'm looking to buy a DSLR soon and been looking at buying one of the Canon Rebels.

geaux - The achilles is in its 2nd round of prazi. It still twitches, but as long as it is eating, I'll try to let the prazi work its magic. I plan on dosing one more round.

Both the long sides and short side on the left are 3/4" starphire glass. I'm very happy with the way the tank came out.

I've mentioned to my wife several times that I would like to keep it FOWLR and get some butterflies too, but she insists on having coral in the tank. In terms of coral, I probably won't have anything serious in there until next fall. That's for several reasons:
- I haven't set up a supply/exhaust air system to help cool the tank during the summer months.
- I do not have suitable lights for the tank. I want to go LED, and need to save some cash for it.
- I work for Kodak, so who knows how things will shake out.

The majestic is 4 to 4.5" long.

Dustin - I'm a point and shoot person. I have a Canon Power Shot SD780 IS. My wife has an interest in photography, so once I give her something to shoot, maybe we'll upgrade to a DSLR. I'm very happy with this camera. We've had it for 2.5 years and it does a good job. It even has an aquarium setting on it. We bought the underwater case and took it to Hawaii in '09. I took a bunch of pics while snorkeling and diving. You can see more here: http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1728512

awesome stand...i'm doing a 281 gallon peninsula, copying your stand and cover.....thanks great, great work!!!!

Thanks CHSUB. If I had to do it over, here are a few things I'd do differently:

1. Make sure the canopy ends below the water line. I designed the canopy to overhand the bottom edge of the eurobracing by 3/8". I never took into account the water line and now there's 1/2" gap between the canopy covers and water line. I should've had the canopy overhang an additional 5/8" to eliminate light spilling out. I can always add a trim board to make up that space, but it's something to keep in mind.

2. Do you plan on having eurobracing on your tank? Do you plan on using a magnet to keep your glass clean? I purchased a might magnet F4 and the wetside doesn't clear my locline returns. There's nothing like a $200 magnet that can't clean two of the most noticeable areas of your tank! Since I plan to remove the two returns along the front of the tank, I won't have the problem, but it is something to think about. In hindsight, I should've had the return holes drilled 1/2 inboard from where they are now. I could've purchased a different magnet or use good old elbow grease as well.

Thanks for the reply and some great pics you have there. I'm planning for a trip to Key West to do some diving in June so my new tank and some diving should be good evidence to the wife I need a new camera. Our better point in shoot got damaged a year or so ago so it's needed...

I had a similar experience with an Ich outbreak that never went away despite taking all my fish out, treat with Cupramine, tried hypo for 6 weeks, leaving tank fishless for 6 weeks but ich somehow manages to creep back up in a few weeks. I finally defeated ich once and for all after I add a properly sized UV for my tank. UV wont cure a major ich outbreak but will keep the ich population low enough to allow your fish to fight ich on its own. Aquaultraviolet is a good brand and its been out there for a while. If you look at their chart rating its rated on an used older bulb and not a new bulb for better accuracy.

I appreciate the suggestion cthetoy. I hope to overcome this PITA parasite! I only have 4 fish from the display tank that finished 3 weeks of cupramine treatment. I wanted to go 4 weeks, but my yellow tang stopped eating 7 days ago and I'm reducing the Cu levels via water changes. Hopefully he'll resume eating soon. The other two tangs and rabbitfish never missed a beat during treatment. Using a seachem test kit, I kept my levels somewhere between 0.5 and 0.6...I always have a tough time telling exactly where it is. For the DT, I have been running the system full of fresh water for the past 10 days. When I get some time, I'm going to scrub down all the rock in the system, drain it, refill it and start cycling. I'm not sure how ich could survive in my system now. I have another 6-8 weeks to observe the 4 survivors and hopefully, if ich is still somehow present, it will reappear during that timeframe.

On a very positive note, today is the third consecutive day the achilles hasn't done the twitching/rubbing up against stuff. It has several "halo like" areas where the flukes were attached on both sides, but they are healing. Also, its appetite is great and will graze nori all day long. He is fattening up nicely! It is in its third round of prazipro, but I'm going to go two more rounds. I think I under dosed the tank the first two rounds (1/2 tsp vs. 1/2Tbsp!).

Here are a couple of pics that sort of show where flukes congregated on the achilles. They are the halo areas and they are all healing.

Thanks Fuzzy!

Here's an update:

I added salt to the system on 2/27. It was running with RODI for ~4 weeks. I only wanted to go 2 weeks initially, but I was too busy with other priorities and it stretched to 4. Prior to adding the salt, I did my best to clean off all the algae from the rock, walls and bottom of the display tank. I added a 32" long filter sock on the return and that did an excellent job catching much of the debris. I probably rinsed it out a dozen times over the course of a week.

I removed all the rock (~200lbs) from my sump, scrubbed it, rinsed it and then put it in a 40gal barrel to dry. I needed to make room to add a Tunze Master DOC 9440 in the sump. Hopefully I'll get that up and running this week.

After checking all my water parameters, I decided to bring my 75gal online. My plan is to monitor my ammonia levels and when they start increasing, take the 75gal offline, do a water change on it and continue to let the main system do its thing for a cycle. I'm tempted to put my Fowler's tang in the DT, because since I added it to the 75gal 6 weeks ago, my emperor angel has noticeably thinned down. It can't compete with the Fowler's as the Fowler's eats everything too fast. I'll try to resist temptation by feeding the 75gal real heavy first. The will help the cycle the whole system cycle too. I'll wait see.

Long over due update....

Long over due update....

I happy to say fish have been in the tank since 4/6/12! It has been a long process, but I'm extremely happy to have life swimming in the display tank again.

To cycle the tank, I purchased the proper ammonia from Ace hardware and dosed to get the cycle going. I don't have the exact amounts and dates in front of me (ask if you want specifics), but I recall it took 7-10 days for the ammonia loving bacteria to get to the point of dosing 1/4 cup ammonia in the evening and then 24 hours later having a 0ppm reading. The 1/4 cup would spike the ammonia level to ~4ppm and I guess that's for approximately 400 gallons. It then took another 7-10 days of dosing a 1/4 cup ammonia per day to get my nitrite loving bacteria to convert it to nitrate. My nitrates read off the charts of my API test kit (to be expected since I kept dosing ammonia). I performed a 200 gallon water change and it dropped the nitrates somewhere in the ballpark of 160ppm (still at the highest measureable level using the API kit). I waited a week or so, and then performed a 300 gallon water change, and that dropped the levels down to 40ppm. That was close enough for me, as I had a bunch of fish coming in, so I moved the following fish into the display tank on 4/6/12:

Goldflake angel ~3.5"
Majestic angel ~4"
Emperor angel ~3"
Potter's angel ~2"
Flame angel ~1.75"
Multicolor angels x 3 1@2.25" and 2 @ 1.75"
Flamehawk
Ocellaris clownfish
Fowler's tang ~4.5"

In terms of the larger angels, all of them are doing well together. You'll see some occassional posturing between them, but that's about it. For the dwarf angels, the flame angel is the low man on the totem pole. If I can, I'd like to try and catch it and move it into another tank so it can fatten up. That will help it hold its own.

I have my 75 gallon off of the main system and in there I have the three survivors from the initial ich outbreak; desjardini tang, hippo tang and foxface. I added the achilles in with them at the same time and planned to use the achilles as the "canary in the coal mine." I figured if they spent a couple of months together in the 75gal without ich returning, then my treatment protocol was successful. Time will tell, but at this point, everything looks good.

In terms of QT, I still have a bunch of fish going through the process, with hopes to move all the fish from the basement to the display tank in early July. I had a pair of Red Sea Regal angels in QT for 5 weeks, but they didn't make it. One came in with some fuzzy marks on its fins, and I immediately treated with metronidazole for 5 days and that seemed to work well, but on day 6, they broke out with ich and I immediately began copper treatment. The never pulled through the treatment, and by far, these were the toughest fish I ever had to get started eating. In the end, they would eat shaved scallops, clams and shrimp, but never enough to make me feel happy they were "in the clear." If I ever attempt them again, they will be the only ones I have in QT at the time.

The other fish I have going through various stages of the QT process are:

Convict tang ~2.5"
Powder blue tang ~3"
Yellow tang ~3.5"
Purple tangs x3 (an impulse buy and we'll see what happens when added to the DT) all are ~2.25"
Black onyx clownfish x2
Flame hawkfish x 2

That about sums it all up. Hopefully, I can get some decent shots of the display tank. It's currently FOWLR and it will likely stay that way until I can afford LED lights (late fall if I'm lucky).

Thanks for the update. Amazing how expensive these builds get and how long they take to plan. I'm currently at a stand still but starting to explore with some different LED fixtures currently on my build....Time will tell what fixture seems to be the best option! Any FTS?!

Here's a full tank shot from Sunday. I changed the aquascape quite a bit to leave it open for when the little ones get bigger!

The right side of the tank is lit by an actinic and 10K 48" T5 bulbs. The left side is only lit by a single 5500K CFL.

My wife and I were watching the tank a few evenings ago and she said, "You're not going to be happy, but I don't think your tank looks that big." That's fine by me, the next one will be bigger!

A few more pics

Due to my unsuccessful attempts at establishing a harem of flame angels for some red in the tank, I'm going to give 3 flame hawkfish an attempt. If it doesn't work out, I think I'll only need to remove the egg crate in front of the overflow, since they seem to go in there easily. Here's the one currently in the DT:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/49249553@N04/7305489044/" title="IMG_8293 by Haffs09, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7103/7305489044_6a35ba232c.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="IMG_8293"></a>

I need a lot more work to get a decent pic of the fish, but here are a couple attempts:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/49249553@N04/7305496760/" title="IMG_8299 by Haffs09, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8004/7305496760_02c8ee05e2.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="IMG_8299"></a>

A similar pic, but with the flame angel in the background and potter's looking straight towards the camera on the right side.

I should also note that the marks on the achilles' from the flukes have healed entirely. You'd never no it had them. Also, the PBT that I received had flukes too, but not as bad as the achilles. The PBT responded favorably to several prazipro treatments, and currently is in its 3rd week of cupramine treatment.

Wow, want to trade wives? ;) I'm hoping to have mine done at the beginning of next year but my major purchases are going to be lighting and water movement so I completely understand!

What are your plans for lighting? I know you said LEDs, any idea or going to wait until your closer to that time? I'm planning on going to MACNA before I pull the trigger to make sure I don't have regret after buying lots of fixtures. I don't think it's too wise to spend a lot on an LED fixture yet as I think we'll see lots of development and price drops in the next 2-3 years.

Mseepman - I'm glad my system is an inspiration. Thanks!

Dustin - No way on the wife swap :)... I'm one lucky guy! She knows that if there is another tank (and bigger house), the next tank will be able to comfortable house full size blue spine unicorn tangs and multiple achilles tangs! It's quite the dream, but I'm going to enjoy this one for a long time!

In terms of LEDs, there was potential for aquiring radions at cost, but that opportunity fell through. Unless I come across a great deal, I'm going to wait and see what comes out over the next 6-9 months. I still have my light rail that I was going to use with 400W halides, so I may try to incorporate that into the plans. If that works, I may be able to get by with 2 or 3 LED fixtures.

Lol. I would not trade the wife in the world, she sometimes barks a bit when I spend too much too quickly but realizes all hobbies are expensive and knows I enjoy it. When I told her I was considering 14 Radions over my DT and I said they were $750 each she about flipped:) I've got some LEDs I'm testing currently and am astounded by the Apollo LED fixture and it's price/performance. I just did some PAR readings and at 100% on B/W I'm getting PAR of 1200 at the surface and 390 at my egg crate which is 13.5" down below water and the fixture is 10.5" above the water! I'll be doing a full test when I have time this weekend with pictures and the fixture at different heights but think I've got the fixture I want to go full scale with. Rainbows of LED colors with many of the fixtures is just a marketing gimick and is not beneficial to our coral but I'm still going to pick up some DIY LEDs to test out and see if reds/greens really add any value with aesthetics.
