I need some help with a hair algae problem my specs are aas follows:

Nitrates 0
nitrites 0
amonia 0
salinity 1.024
temp 81.6
ph 8.2

nothing I currently have in there seems to do anything with it ive tried taking tweezers and picking it off but it comes back in droves please help before my tank looks like my back yard :)

The nitrites/nitrates/phosphates reading 0 just shows that they are in balance with the algae, that is the algae is using them up as soon as they are available. Macro algae competition may be the best way to resolve this. Also, using a phosphate remover and maintaining good alk/Ca will ecourage coraline to compete as well.

Mine went away when I started buying my water from a different LFS...I also started rinsing the frozen food after it thawed with RO water.. it went away within a few weeks. Good luck...

no unfortanly I know that is part of the problem I was looking into the tap water filter that you can buy at most LFS for around $50 but I dont want to go as far as spending the upwards of 150 on a RO unit yet

I would check out Ebay you can get a good unit for around $100. I used the TWF for a long time, but it doesn't compare. Its unreliable and gives a poor yield. The cartridges are also almost $30 so its not even economical. If you have an algae problem I would start there.

Eddies sells it,. So does healthy pet center in Troy. Price? Depends on what you mean by reasonable. I think its ~$1.00/Gallon

first of all welcome

secondly walmart sells ro water for between 59-69 cents (can't remember right off hand)

I think I might do the whole walmart thing buy like 20 gallons cause I think they have the 5 gallon jugs so like 4-5 of them and get a rubbermaid trash can or something and start doing some premixing so I always have new water on hand thanks all

If the walmart filter is anything like the one that the old grocery store I used to go to has, then go with that. You bring your own container and fill from the machine. There should be a sticker on it with the last service date to give an idea how old the filters are. Get some 5 gallon buckets with a lid from home depot (or use an old instant ocean bucket). You will want some fresh water for topping off the tank.
What do you have for a clean up crew?

they have a calgon water machine at the clifton park wal mart, I think thats what Robin is referring to ?

is that calgon machine ro water ? they have 1 gallon's and 5 gallons the price seemed pretty fair as well ...

I keep saying calgon, I think I mean cull-i-gine (dunno how to spell it, lol)

AMF, how old is that 96 W quad ? you are using and what brand salt ?

If you think about it, the primary component of yout tank is WATER, so an RODI unit in your home is almost a required investment if your reef is to be trouble free, plus running to PriceChopper or WallyMart for water every week is a major PITA.

www.wateranywhere.com good stuff ;) HTH

Whem I complained about a patch of hair algae to Dan, he said put a rock on it. Well, the area was too irregular for a rock, but I molded a peice of that two part epoxy to cover about a 50 cent piece area. It worked - the algae is gone, and it did not take very long. Does this count as a diy project?

sorry its taken me so long to respond but I was away for the weekend to answer your questions the machine in the glennville walmart is culligan and it is RO water the bulb in my light is about 3 months old and I use instant ocean salt I would like to get an RO unit but because of limited funds right now it will have to wait just looking for a tempory fix for short term use.

have a 3 stage RO (TFC), for sale with a booster pump,???
if u are interested to buy give me a PM.... or email at kokomikee@yahoo.com

i have a Culligan whole house set up here on my well, and i added a DI to it for 50$ from a mail order place.....

Ro is the best thing u can do, dont over feed ever, use Scarlet Hermits, and a varity, of Snails to help kep the rocks and glass clean.........also a protien skimmer is a great help too, and maybe a good groth of macro algea.......and keep the additions of any supp. to little to none....

peace, mike
