Hair Algae Solution That Worked For Me

I inherited this tank from a friend who wasnt taking care of it and was sick of the algae. I just ordered this product and will let you know the results. Here is the before pic

OK dose #9 and it appears that it is starting to work. The HA is starting to fade in color and the places where it is dying off are getting cyano on them. I'll get some pics up tomorrow when the lights come back on.

Paul_PSU. That's good to hear. I was beginning to wonder why it may not be working for your situation. Hope it keeps dying.

I am wondering if my dosing vodka had anything to do with it. I am dosing about 5ml per day. I don't know what effect that would have on the active ingredients. I'll keep updating.

Paul:

I dosed Vodka for a while after I got rid of my hair algae. It does give rise to a lot of cyano for some reason (I guess it has to do with encouraging bacterial growth). I have stopped doseing it since and things are under control.

OK I figured I had this little Flip Video thing so what would be better than pics, a video. I just took the video. This is the HA at its worst. The big rock up front middle with the Milli frag on it is where the die-off is starting the most. You can see dark spots with cyano in those areas near the top of the rock. That just started the other day.

Seems like many of you have just as much hair algae as I do. However, mine is all over the sand bed too. Does anyone else have this? How do you guys clean your sand bed?

gravel vac the sand bed, just pinch the hose to control flow and keep sand from being vac'ed out.

Anymore word on the people who have had success? Is it coming back? After all my efforts and reseach - I am now convinced my HA problem is due to phoshates in my live rock that are leeching out feeding the HA. I am not sure if a quick fix for me will have long term effects??

Anyone?

It had certainly had positive effects in my tank. But I too must be leaching phosphates. I have shortened my light cycle to 5 hours and with one of the 10k bulbs off to boot. I've been running Phos-Lock for a month now. I worry about my fish dying of starvation I feed so little. Only use DI water measuring 0 TDS with my meter. This stuff grew like mad..... AlgaeFix really seemed to stun it's growth quite a bit. I did see some of it lose it's color too. I don't know if AlgaeFix alone is going to be enough...

Paul.....

You're right a vid is as good if not better than pics...what would be good is if you could post a "finished" vid after ridden tank of all that green crap..........

Nice job on the tank (I'm sure it's much better than that vid, as their hard to do) one question ...how do you attach those "shelves" holding frags...to the side of tha tank???

Good luck in finishing...

Dick

Dick,
I will definitely post two more videos. I will post another when there is a visible difference showing the die-off and then one at the end. The frag racks are just egg crate super glued to magfloats on two of them and then the other two are egg crate super glued to Neodymium Magnets (http://www.magnet4sale.com/home.php?cat=256) I got from a group buy with some fellow reefers.

I remember you from DJFrankie's DIY Denitrator thread. I was posting on there early last year when I built one. Worked like a charm when I was switching from FOWLR to a reef tank and my nitrates where through the roof.

well ive been battling hair algae and diatoms for months now and am at my wits end with the traditional method. i have done dark periods, carbon dosing, manual removal, have upgraded lighting, balanced MG, CA and ALK levels and purchased a new RO/DI unit. all of which has slowed down my algae growth tremendously but now im looking to deliver the 1 2 punch as it were to the rest of it. i have purchased some algaefix marine and started my dose today. i took a pre-dose picture with my phone so the quality is a little low, but you can see the extent of the infestation.
