Hair Algae Solution That Worked For Me

I had a huge breakout of hair algae in my 210 tank. I tried everything. Water changes, running RowaPhos in phospate rector, have always used RODI water, have an oversized Octopus Extreme 300 skimmer, etc.

I tried to solve issue with fish / invertebrates such as lawnmower blennie, tangs, sea hare, etc. The sea hare was good and did the job but just couldn't keep up.

My phosphate readings were always zero so it was a mystery to me how it kept growing. After battling the algae for several months I finally got desperate and tried a product called "Algaefix Marine" made by "API". I hate to use chemicals but the stuff was taking over and I was considering taking the rock out of the tank and cooking it to start over.

Much to my surprise, this product really did the job. After about 4 treatements over a 12 day period my hair algae is almost completely gone. I haven't lost any corals, snails, crabs or fish or observed any side effects. The only thing I noticed was some of the sponge in my tank have some white on the edges. The sponge are still alive but a little white. Not sure if that was due to the Algaefix product or not.

Anyway. I just wanted to share this. I know the Algaefix Marine product is fairly new. I felt like I was taking a chance with my livestock / corals but it all worked out very well for me.

Disclaimer-I realize every tank is a little different with different corals / livestock so try this at your own risk. But I just wanted to share that this actually worked in my situation. The other thing that's a little scary is the label has a warning that it contains a chemical that in the state of California is known to cause cancer. I make sure I always wash with soap and water if my skin comes in contact with water or the Algaefix product.

what kind of corals do you have in your tank? sps, lps, do you have any inverts if so how did they fare? i have an outbreak of hair algae as well but it seems to be diminishing over time and water changes.

I have a little bit of everything right now. Mostly SPS, A few leathers and a few LPS. Overall I have about 18 different corals.

Also have lots of hermit crabs, a few turbo snails, two sand sifting starfish, etc. They all seem to be doing fine.

I wasn't getting anywhere with the hair algae. It just seemed to be getting worse and spreading so I had to do something. Sounds like you are at least making some progress.

You did have hair algae, and not bryopsis, right? It seems like people use the two terms interchangeably at times, so I thought I'd ask. I'm excited to hear this, because I've been fighting GHA for months. I'm re-curing about 1/3 of my rock, and was planning on re-curing more in a couple of weeks.

If this works, I'd be SO happy. I'm tired of people coming over, seeing the tanks and saying, "Wow, that's neat. What's all that green junk?"

I had never really heard of Bryopsis so I checked the internet for some pictures. The pictures I saw are definately not what I had. Mine was hair algae. I also pointed out what I had at my local fish store and they also identifed it as hair algae.

I was to the point also of cooking my rock. I'm hoping now if I can keep the phosphates down it won't get re-started. I think I may have spiked some phosphates a while back which enabled it to get a foothold.

One more thing. Just wanted to point out that there is also Algaefix made by API for fresh water aquariums. You would want to make sure you get the "Marine" version. The bottles look very much the same.

devo..........

That's for the update....this can be HUGE as you know. Please keep us updated as u stated u first dosed around Dec first so as time passes good or bad u must update. I like u hate to use chem. but sometimes we have no choice....good job...

I applied my treatements as follows:

First dose on 11/29
2nd dose on 12/2
3rd dose on 12/5
4th dose on 12/8
5th dose on 12/11
6th dose today (12/14).

By the fifth dose I really saw results. As of today I still have some hair algae left but I'd say it's 90% gone from where I started.

Wish I had taken pictures before and after.

Thanks

Dang I wish I had read this before. I wanted to try that API but was not sure. I got 150lbs of LR mostly with GHA and debated on API algaefix then decided to bleach them and start curing them again.

Thanks for the info. I had purchased this product, but am so apprehensive about putting chemicals in. Maybe I will give it a shot if I cannot solve my problem any other way.

devoman..........

I just came from the company web site and I must say I VERY impressed. Also they stated it can be used to combat "RED SLIME" now that's huge why....because u know that critter is not an alge but a bacteria of sorts and most have used a some form of erythromycin. Some folks have good LUCK w/ those, some have disasters...This product appears NOT to be antibody but contains.....u ready for this....

Poly[oxyethylene(dimethyliminio)ethylene(dimethyliminio)ethylene dichloride]: 4.5%.

dwimber.....

That's actually what I was thinking this am! as I'm setting up a refugium and need to know the answer to that one........so if anyone can chime in that would be great !!!!!!

Devo, a 210 gallon tank with no 'fuge? Why not? I'm told that "positive de-nitrification" is a big help in slowing problem algae growth.

(plus I sound smart when I use big words!)

Someday maybe. Just haven't gotten around to it yet. It will be easy for me to set up as I have my sump and equipment all situated downstairs while the aquarium is upstairs.
