Hair algae?

Is it on rocks, walls, or sand? Lots of flow directly at it. Are you running any chaeto in your sump? How is your skimmer doing? Are you using any phosphate removal methods? Do you have any tangs in your tank?

I have the largest sea hare i would bet that anyone has ever seen that might work. I dont want to sell him but may put him on loan for grazing purposes.

Pictures dammit!

I have seen that hare before at Jason's, it looks like a hairless wiener dog....haha

I still have that one, I have to grow hair algae on purpose just for him. This one is a Aplysia dactylomela(giant black ring). Maybe if it works out for Preston then it can just travel the circuit...ridding the FRAG world of nuisance algae:uzi:

I feel so bad I acclimated him for 30-45 min to try to help him to be so shocked from the ship and sitting in a bag. he moved around my tank for about an hour then stopped. when i got home tonight he was decaying and a funky color. i will post before and after pic as soon as i can. I'm sorry Jason R.I.P. Monster sea hair!!

It happens Preston. Don't sweat it. Sea hare's can be very difficult and challenging to keep. I have a couple others if you want to try again, but to be honest your hair Algae really wasn't that bad, you may just get away with throwing in a bunch of Astraea's and some GFO. Thank you

Ya i need more clean up crew stuff. I just hate to see stuff die is all.

What about a Scopas Tang or a Flame Fin Tang? I have both and have no hair algae.

They are both entertaining. The Scopas kind of floats around like he is the king while the Flame Fin likes to zoom around the tank like he is in Nascar.

I have seen Foxface Rabbitfish do the trick before. Most tangs are pretty adamant on eating algae.

If it's really bad, a combination of removing by hand, siphoning, water changes, and a fish have done the trick for me.

If all else fails, 3-day blackout.

"3 day blackout" can you please explain a little more?

3-day blackout is basically like it sounds. Cover up the tank completely for two or three days causing the algae to starve from lack of light. Coral will do fine. Some picky SPS might not but that's hard to say.

Where do you get your water? Could be that.

M-6 is right, no matter what your temporary "solution" you'll need to address the issue with your parameters or it will simply come back. How is the algae getting enough nutrients to thrive?

  • What is your water source? 0TDS RO/DI from your home is best, from LFS as a secondary. IMHO no excuse to use distilled, bottled, or tap here in the valley.
  • What do you feed and does your livestock consume it all in a few minutes? Do you target feed or add food to the water column?
  • What lighting are you using and what lighting schedule does your tank have? Does it have access to indirect or direct sunlight for a portion of the day?
  • Do you have any filtration to remove organics before they break down? Skimmer, socks, pads, or floss? How often are they cleaned or exchanged?
  • Do you have any phosphate absorbing media? Phosban, GFO, etc? Are you carbon dosing - vodka, biopellets, etc?
