Hair Algea Problems

I have a emerald crab, sea urchin, and hermits/snails for my hair algea and im wondering if upgrading from a nano protein skimmer in my 20g to a sea clone that fits a 100g aquarium would help slow down the algea blooms

Are you using R/O ? have you tested your TDS lately. Are you cleaning your skimmer cup regularly? Did the skimmer work fine until now? Bulbs old ?

personally for that size tank i would use this filter/uv sterilizer/protein skimmer. i had it on my 20 gallon, and then moved it to my 72 and the skimmer has no problem keeping up with the demand of that size tank. it is rated for 100 gallons, i think, and would give you more than 1 benefit.
This is the new model:

But i have the first multi skimmer deluxe and you can still find them and they work great.

reeftopia.com...100 turbo/100s blue hermits/24 cerith...109.00 shipped...you need a bigger cleanup crew ...buy this they will clean your tank then sell or give away half of them when clean...keep the cerith and 40 hermits 20 turbos...no more hair...

TDS Total Dissolved Solids and when your water filtration is not working or exausted you can measure TDS and know when it's time to change filters. A very common problem is water change and top off water having high po4(algae food) cause of old filters. If you haven't changed anything in the system and hair is no showing up, don't throw money at the problem find out what is causing it. Although buying a bigger better skimmer is not a bad idea just won't solve the problem.

i agree with o.c.d. buying a new skimmer is a good idea, but not a fix to your problem. your problem is phosphates, and he is right about that.

So this is a 20 gallon with a skimmer rated for a 20 gallon?
How many fish and there type?
Tanks age?

I use a hang over the back filter.Don't know what TDS are.I take my protein skimmer out 2 times a week and clean the tubes and the inside. Its been running really slow lately.Bulbs only one month old.
I just want to know if the large protein skimmer would help. this is the photo

No. IMO that skimmer is not going to help the situation at all. There are many contributing factors to HA and other algaes. Build up of crud, po4 being pulled through the LR from an exhausted sandbed, high no3 etc. I'm battling it myself right now and slowly winning.

As far as the skimmer goes, good waterchanges on a 20 gallon tank can make up for a skimmer all together;)

IMO me and many others do not use uv nor believe the function of them is necessary

agreed

some one told me that my is byopsis and is created by low magnesium so this might be trew since i don't dose any magnesium.

The problem is most likely what is being mentioned above from a few. It sounds like your using tap water which has most likely phosphates, trates and many other elements that are not good for a reef, that cause algae problems. You first want to start using reverse osmosis deionized water, then see how things go. If still not better i'd suggest a better skimmer like an octo 100f. I imagine this will take care of your problem.

low Mg doesn't create bryopsis, but high Mg can help get rid of it. What's causing it is what was stated earlier, PO4 and probably nitrates. You need to find what's causing the source of the PO4 & nitrates and eliminate it. I have an urchin too and he never touches my HA. He does, however, clean up any and all coralline algae that grows in my tank. Ditto on my emerald crab. Won't touch HA but loves bubble algae.

You stated earlier that you don't know what TDS stands for, so you aren't checking for everything. In Indiana where i'm at, the water has zero, trates, trites, amm, copper but a tds of 400+. If you put it into your tank the HA grows like its out of control. TDS depends on where you are but i highly doubt the well water is fine.

I know but I take water samples to my LFS and they said my water is almost perfects for aquariums.
THey say its fine and i trust them a lot.

Take a sample of plain tap water to them and ask them to check it with a TDS meter. If the pure water sample tests over 1 TDS then it is not suitable for a fish tank IMO. Your TDS needs to be 0 thats my opinion tho.
