haitian anemone

I got a haitian anemone about 3 days ago. The LFS told me that most maroons will not host this type of anemone but there was a maroon hosting it in the LFS so since it was cheap and pretty I got it anyway with hope that my maroon would indeed host it, but it is day three now and I have not even seen him go near it. The anemone is in great condition it is white with bright flourescent purple tips. Should I stop waiting and just get a BTA or is there a chance that the clown will come around?

I have heard of maroon and clarkii clowns taking to this type of anemone. In the wild this anemone does not host clowns.Usually it takes longer than 3 days for a clown to even recognize an anemone is in the tank.Give it time and the anemone might host your clown, but you will have more luck with a BTA as far as hosting is concerned.

As vanna notes, there are no clowns within this anemone's range so it is not a natural host. I also have one of these, and have successfully hosted multiple pairs of juvenile ocellaris in the anemone. Then again some clowns will host in corals, mushrooms, polyps, and even clam mantles, so it probably depends upon the species and individual clowns in question..

The odds of your anemone being a host for your clowns are about as good as the anemone eating them.

Also, if it is white, then it isn't in great condition. A white anemone is a bleached one. It should be tan in color.

I did have this type of anemone at one point with some black percs and it did just fine. They eventually abandoned it when i added a sebae. The hatian eventually got caught up in a powerhead when moving around and never came back. Hatian's seem to move alot - at least this was my experience more so than my sebae, so it may be a few days - to a week before they take to it.

If the anemone is bleached then it is doing perfectly well. I fed it today a piece of lance fish with some metal tongs and it took it in half a second. Still no luck with the maroon clown hosting it but if the anemone might eat him I dont blame him for being hesitant. I am still considering getting a BTA but having two anemones in my 20 gallon seems like a bit much. I like to diversify my tank. If the clown hosts the haitian or not I plan on getting an anemone shrimp and that should host a haitian or am I mistaken?

From how you described it, there is no question about it being bleached. That is great that it ate, but saying it is doing perfectly well is going a bit for. Not trying to sound like a ( not nice person ) but, I just want you to be prepared. If it makes a recovery, you will notice it taking on a tannish color.

If the maroon is hosted by it, it is a good thing that it isn't doing it now, maroons are hard on anemones, and that would only add to its stress.

I am not sure if a haitian anemone will host an anemone shrimp or not -- don't have any experience with them. But I wonder what would happen if both the shrimp and clown were hosted by it, from my understanding the clown will try to kick it out.

I agree with you about not getting a BTA, IMO, two anemones in a 20 would be a bit much, BTAs can/will get fairly large.
