Halichoeres melanurus

My Yellow Wrasse (Halichoeres chrysus) jumped out of my tank a few months ago. He managed to find a <1" wide openning to jump through. It is now closed.

I am considering replacing him or getting something different. I was wondering if anyone has experience with Halichoeres melanurus.

You said it. Good reef safe fish. Careful with shrimp and possibly clam mantles. Active swimmer. 90 gallon will be great. Not a pretty fish. It is stunningly beautiful. As are most wrasses. As far as agro is concerned. Do you have any other Halichoeres wrasses? Do you plan on getting any more?

love my melanurus lol great community fish, eats all kinds of nasty pests.....active swimmer, social and leaves my big peppermint alone too lol

HAHA Dave I ordered one through St. James but they came in too small when I still had my Angler so I couldn't pick it up. I did a TON of searching for a Wrasse, and the Melanarus was the best choice that I could come up with.

I knew I asked about it before but couldn't find the thread. Sorry guys.

How did you find that? I tried searching with google and didn't get anything. Did you just page back?

Dave

Its funny you ask. I had remembered that i posted something. Couldn't think of who it was for. I did a search through my previous posts. Took a while but i found it. I hate to say this but at one time i had over 10 different species of wrasses living together. Now i have i think 3 or 4. Soon to up one more if i see a potters wrasse or chaoti on the chopping block. I would say i have lost many wrasses due to trial and error. My next venture in wrasses is going to be a dozen flasher. I love to watch flashers um flash dance. Probably in the next couple of weeks. Not sure what species to go with.

I have tried a few different flashers. Little success because they are poor shippers.

If someone local would get a mix of male and female I might give them a try again.

NWRogers may want to chime in on this one. He had one that was one of the most attractive fish I have ever seen in its adult form. Exquisite coloration. It was very active and a good reef citizen and will consume many pests including pyramidal snails, asterina starfish etc. However when they reach adulthood they will also munch on small snails and crabs thus they are usually depicted as not a "reef safe" species.
