Halide orientation

I have a question..........I have two 400W HQI Halides on my 135G. The manual for teh lights said to mount them perpendicular to the tank. I'm getting decent coverage, but have a "dark" spot in the middle. Would it help to make the pendants paralell to the tank instead? Thanks.

There are perpendicular and parallel reflectors with each design optimized for the orientation indicated. I suspect your coverage would actually get worse with them mounted parallel. With your 6' tank, 3 bulbs would be better. However, Mel runs two over her 135, so perhaps she can provide some guidance.

Hey sorry...I've been out of town.

Ken, I like the two bulbs over the 6' tank personally. I have my bulbs mounted perpendicularly and I really like the spread of light that I get.

The reason I like having the small darker spot is that it allows me to keep a range of corals without having to have high light-tolerating ones on top and lower light tolerating ones on the bottom. So it sorta puts me out of the traditional 'box' when it comes to coral placement. I think it provides more versatility.

Anyways, JMO!
