Hammer Coral Question

I just got a Hammer Coral (1st coral so please be patient). I'm wondering how far the tenticles will expand. When I first put it into the tank, it was very retracted. The tenticles now appear very fluffy and fluid. Will/can they extend their tenticles farther than about 1"? I'm just trying to figure out if it's happy or not. It seems to be fairly active. I read that they can extend the length of their body...Mine's not coming close to that. Is this normal?

Do you feed your hammer?? I have read some people target feed. Yours looks VERY happy. How long have you had it?? I have a small one with just one "head" I can't wait for it to branch and look that full.

The hammer was one of my first corals. It has been in my system for almost two years and has grown from 4 heads to an uncountable amount... I lost count of the heads at 16. The coral is now about 9 inches in diameter.

My hammer is under a mix of PC and MH lighting. I target feed it once a week with whatever mix the rest of the tank is getting (usually mysis, brine and gel Formula 1 for herbavores). The coral also catches pieces of food during the bi-daily feeding... It's always eating!

When a hammer grows new heads, does it grow them from the base of the skeleton or from the top?

The new heads looked to me like they grew out of the sides of the existing heads down near the skeletal branches.


Edit: btw... I love Mozart's Requiem! I saw it at Avery Fisher Hall performed by the New York Philharmonic, with the Vienna Boys Choir. What a moving piece of music Great signature line

I just got my hammer frag about a month ago. It's been growing, and I've been wonderin how it would branch. Is it correct to assume that the new heads add skeleton as they branch out?
