Hammer Coral

Yes, the hammers can sting both fish and corals, but it is not a traumatic, paralyzing sting for fish. They may notice it though, and stay away from it. We got our branching hammer coral from TFP (I bet you bought the aussie purple tip I had my eye on too!) last week, and have it right in the sand. Looks great and seems to be really happy there! We currently have MH lights. We do feed it, and we feed per head, pieces of scallop as well as our reef mixture for all the corals. I wouldn't glue that large of a coral down just yet. We always place our stuff, make sure it looks happy where we place it for at least 2 weeks before gluing anything (unless its a frag and too small to safely just sit somewhere) I hate gluing things down. It's a real pain if you end up changing your mind later (which we have rearranged several times to make room for new corals.) We also turn off all filtration when feeding.

Over the last 2 days I've been seeing a few really long tentacles flapping around in the current. Are these what I've read are sweeper tentacles searching for food? I tried to give it some thawed Mysis shrimp the other day, but I had to leave right after so I didn't get to see if it ate anything.

I have some frozen shrimp from the seafood counter in my freezer. Can I just cut one up and feed it some of that? I've read pea sized? I just got my delivery of Reef Chili from BRS, but I don't know if it will eat that or not.

It might be. They sent me a 30% off coupon for the purchase of any one (1) coral, so I was able to get what I thought was a good deal. They wanted $144, but with the discount I was able to get for $100.

image.jpgThere is a lot of info on this thread. I just bought a Purple Tipped Aussie, it has 8 branches. After reading the posts I placed mine about 3" from bottom on crevice of rock. How long did it take for yours to open. Mine looks like it is trying.

Sorry for not responding, but for some reason this thread didn't appear in my subscription list. Mine was open within about 48 hours if I remember correctly. It's been through a lot with me and has been a great piece of coral. I bleached it and it is still recovering but its been growing really well. It's actually starting to grow over some of my zoanthids. After about 12 months of fighting with some contaminant in my tank, things are finally looking up.

I'm seeing sweepers for the first time in forever and things are starting to get color back. It's a wonderful feeling.

How is yours doing? Any pictures?
