nobody panic, i havent got one get. sugar magnolia thanks for the trhead it was very helpful i will be looking for another fish.

I have a 50 gal with 3 tangs, one a yellow. I truely believe if it's well fed, small and has clean stable water with hiding spots it will be happy. And well fed means 4-6 times through out the day. My fish love me. ;)

You have alot to learn there is no way 1 let alone 3 Tangs can be happy in a 50g tank

I'm not trying to stir up the police, but I think the size of the fish has a lot to do with whether or not it's "happy". I think a 1" yellow tang would be a lot happier in a 40 breeder than a 9" yellow tang in a 75 gallon tank (which is supposedly big enough). Yeah, we all know that a tang doesn't belong in a pico, but who are we to decide a small one can't go in a middle size tank? JMO

They may be happy now, but wait a while...

This is absolutely true. Problem is that a yellow is full-grown at 9"(or bigger). From what I have learned(fish-wise) you should always plan for anything you want, at their full potential size. Yes, if you currently have a 40 breeder, and are setting up a 180, and want to go to your LFS and pick up a baby(1") yellow tang, SURE. If you plan to house him in the 40 forever, NO. But on the principle of saying that no yellow tang will ever ne happy in a smaller tank, you are correct, it depends on their size, and TEMPORARY housing of babies of larger species can certainly be done successfully.

Quite a while back (before aquarium forums became popular) I bought a small 2" yellow tang for my 4' long 50g. It did well and grew quickly in my lightly stocked reef tank. After almost a year it had grown to nearly 5" and started to hide frequently. Not long after it developed red blotches on its body and passed away. To me it looked like stress had weakened the fish's immune system, so my gut feeling was that the fish needed a much larger environment to do well when near their mature size.

Nowadays, with information so easy to obtain, I'd hope that these mistakes of the past won't be repeated.

I think a small tang would be "okay" for a short period of time providing you have an established tank, but eventually with growth it will need to be moved into a larger tank.... i.e. 75 gallon + like all the big online sellers suggest.
