Hardy Beginner Clam

Is there such a beast?
We would like to get a small clam but unsure of one to get. Is there one that is hardy and looks good that will live and thrive under T5s with other tank inhabitants?

Suggestions?

They can be brightly colored, but try not to get one that is too small. Shoot for a 3 to 4 incher. The smallest and largest ones are usually harder to maintain than the medium ones. Bear in mind, both can get big (over 12").

Are there any fish that I cannot have with a clam?

there are many things that may not be the best choice with clams. it would be easier if you listed what fish you have, and what fish you want(include crabs, shrimp ect) and then go from there

Don't put one anywhere near a female maroon clown's territory. Mine knocked the crap out of my crocea. I should have figured she would since she moves 2-3lb rocks if she doesn't like where I put them.

Copperbands are usually good with clams and corals. I had one with clams and corals and had no tourble at all. I say that your fine with a copperband.

Do the Squamosa clams need alot of light?
I have a 6in derasa and is doing great under my T-5's. Do the Squamosa clams like to be on the sand or up on rocks?

all the clams really like a lot of light, some just seem to be able to adapt to a little less light. how much light you have over your tank should decide where you can place your clam.

how deep is your tank? how many bulbs do you have? do they have individual reflectors?

Tank is 24in deep
The light has 14-39watt bulbs and has individual reflectors.
Do the Squamosa clams have more color than the Derasa clams?
My Derasa is really a cool orange color but I'm looking for a different color for my next clam

you can find Squamosa' in different colors sometimes but they can be $500 and up(if you can find them) if you want blues and greens at a reasonable price then Croceas are it. they may be ok on the bottom but just to be safe i would put it up in the rock work. i'll PM you a link with a lot of nice Croceas.
