This is a "reef" area in martin county, i think? near the stuart area which is right by hutchenson island.

I was wondering if it is indeed an actual reef reef with corals - i haven't really seen pics of it .. . it'd be neat to go snorkelling there in warmer weather.

I lived in Martin County for 25 yrs. Nice place to snorkel years ago. Now it has alot of damage from people walking on the worm reef. I would say it is still a nice place to snorkel on the back side of the reef. On your way you can visit the House Of Refuge. A small history museum. Just north of that on the same side of Stuart beach is the Elliot museum and across the street from that is the Florida Oceanagraphic Society. Good nature walk, a couple of tanks( I helped and plumbed the first tanks that sit on the floor in 93), they have a new, very large saltwater pond and touch tanks. If you like to fish for snook and have a boat I've got some spots for you. Best two stores are Aquatic World 772 220 7700,453 SE Monterey Rd. Stuart. Ask for Rick. Fintastic Aquariums 772 692 9950. 3305 NE Main Avenue, Jensen Beach Carl or Mike or anyone there is best to ask for. I could go on but I better stop here. If you would like anymore info just e-mail me.

I just did a litle research on that place, wow, it has alot of life in that little area. That wouldbe a cool place to snorkel, i would have to buy a snorkel, but at lealst i wouldnt have to pay thought the nose for lessons for that...hahaha, that is what is keeping me from the deep stuff.lol

seth....best way to get certified is through VCC, I think they will let minors take classes. Its cheaper than most places and you get college elective credit for it.

does anyone know where to get reasonably priced dive gear-im planning on getting certified with my bonus this year and i'd like to be able to get everything. thanks!

I know UCF also has a scuba club but i am not sure of the intricacies of their rules prices etc but i should check it out since i am a student and see if they do any community work too.

Thanks for the awesome tips about the reef, looks like there will be a place to plan a summer field trip. I love going to litlte museums too you never know what you will find or learn!

I have been there a few times. There really arent much corals around there but there are lots of nice fish. I caught a top hat out there. When you go there you need to make sure that the ocean is calm and most importantly that its low tide. It can get kind of rough and merky during hi tide. If you can drive another hour south you can go to peanut island in West Palm. It is a much better place.

I think its a 3 credit class and would require a "lab" fee. So whatever in state tuition per credit hour would be (times three) and the lab. Check out the VCC website for that stuff....

ok I did it for you:

PEN 1136 2 credits
SCUBA TRAINING
. Prerequisite: Basic swimming ability and good health An introduction to the proper techniques of safe scuba diving. (Special Fee: $65.00)

$69.69 for in state....so total would be $204. I think you need to buy your own snorkle, fins (not flippers....you will hear that way too much), and mask. Wetsuits are nice too. Then there is the cost of the checkout dives which is often down in west palm, 2 2 tank dives (4 total) over 2 days which you get a discount for. Its really a good deal.

I have some stuff that I have been meaning to sell. It used to fit me, so it may fit you fine. LMK if you are interested. The regulators will need a rebuild, but they are GOOD ones. No dive computer.

Seth, if you are in High school still, you might ask your school if they would pay for you to take a college course for college credit. Call it a intro to biology and physics, which it is.
