has anyone had any experience with maroon clowns?

I have a gold stripe maroon and he is super aggressive beat up my bta so bad he lost most of his tentacles and is just now starting to come back to life he chases any fish that gets near his anemone. Very pretty but can be a pain. He's easily he most aggressive fish in my tank.

Very aggressive. Female worse than male.

I had a pair of maroons at one point.. They are beautiful fish but man are they mean.
They always nipped at my Salfin tang, she now is missing a good chunk of her tail.
Eventually the female maroon killed my male maroon after 3 years of being paired together. I was forced to remove the female.

i believe that both are males, will i be okay? i have two male maroons, a snowflake eel and a mandarin gobie in a 30 gallon reef tank with 20 ponds of live rock and two anemones which are currently not being hosted by any clowns

I have a single maroon clown in my tank, he's about 4-5 inches and from time to time a 6 inch lunar wrasse will chase him for a couple seconds. Seems to me the clown is a big chicken. I tried getting it a green carpet anemone which didn't end up lasting too long, it didn't even notice it was in the tank. Anyone have a suggestion for what kind of anemone or coral these guys like to host?

As long as the two males show no aggression to each other, you should be fine!
That's a lot of livestock for a 30 gallon!
My female maroon was a good 4.5" and the male was 3".

how can you tell the male from female?

When you get them as juveniles, they're all males. Until that is once they start forming a pair and once that happens, the larger of the 2 will turn into a female. Thus meaning the larger is female. Keep in mind, you will not find a female in a tank filled with juvenile maroon clownfish in your LFS.

Think again. If you have 2 males in a tank, I can guarantee one will turn into a female once they start forming as a pair, All clownfish are males regardless of species until they form a pair. That's when one will turn into a female. If you keep only one clownfish in a tank, he will remain a male clownfish.

I agree w/ this comment, and I'm sure they meant you will be fine as one will turn female, the dominant of the two, this being true of course if they were actually small enough to both be male.
Some aggression is normal in hashing it out, excessive fin tearing is when I would consider seperating them.
Hopefully they weren't both females at purchase, as long as they were under about an inch and a half chances are they were still male.
Oh and sidenote, it may be difficult to supply enough pods for that mandarin in that size tank/that much LR, and I don't agree w/ those thinking frozen foods will sustain them either, not long term anyway.

I have a friend that has a mandarin that will only eat frozen foods now and its huge going on 5 years hea had him oys biggest one ive ever seen
