For 30 bucks I picked up a tongue/slipper coral. The interesting thing was it was shaped like a heart. This cannot be natural. Is it possible to make these grow in various shapes?

If so, I would really like to make an entire aquarium of geometrics. Kind of mario style if u can picture that (minus the jelly fish)

I supposed you could frag almost anything into a particular shape, but it would probably grow out back into its normal configuration...

That is basically the growth pattern that they have, they are either long and straight or have a slight curve to them such as yours. Make sure to feed it a couple times a week for it to thrive. I usually see them flat on the sand bed not on their sides like that though

Awesome. Thanks for the advice. I will lay it flat. It devoured a smashed up silverside for me already.

I have a frogspawn and a torch frag. I assume they eat the same thing? They all look great for my first 3 corals...it has only been a few days , but when I tried waving hands they pooped out early...immature tank @ the time...it was free lol. :artist:

As far as natural curvature...I guess its not to farfetched...after all there is a giant heart shaped reef in australia.

Its underside is concave. Should I make a mound of sand or just lay it

Just lay it in the sand at least a few inches away from any other corals, as they can walk around like most plate corals. Nice piece.

Thanks. Im happy with it, although it is a bit akward to place being heartshaped. It sent out a stingacle (my word for a stinging tentacle) to my torch coral but was just out of reach. It was pretty cool to watch. Gave him some more space lol. I think my eels wants to live under it but he's too big lol.

Slipper corals will grow like that if they are located at the base of a rock or wall in habitat for long periods of time. I once saw one that was completely "L" shaped from growing up the wall of a tank.
