I've never had a problem with rubbermaid stuff, but has anyone heard/read of any issues with the sterilite containers from walmart? Thanks....daniel

I don't have any links, but i remember reading a few threads awhile back regarding rubbermaid containers and possible leaching of this or that. I've never read any threads regarding the sterilite ones though. I'm not even sure if it's the same material as the rubbermaids.

you know, I had some of the clear totes that we used for clothes that developed a white powdery film inside of them.. I dont remember the brand. but we had to line them with sheets to keep the clothing clean. I use another clear one as my top off res...

I did ALLOT of reading on this subject a few years ago. There was something about the number (recycle number) but i dont remember exactly witch ones were bad. http://www.americanchemistry.com/s_plastics/bin.asp?CID=1102&DID=4645&DOC=FILE.PDF

Here is a link to someone who mailed Sterilite - http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=246383&highlight=rubbermaid+AND+safe

I actually use the long 50g rubbermaid tub (blue w/grey lid) as my sump. It has little "feet" on the bottom that some people had crack so i took a piece of foam and cut out the feet so it would support the bottom rather than just the feet. Drilled 4 bulkheads in it too.

The widest point at the top lip is about 30 1/4" X 20 1/4". I just checked and the one that I use for water changes is bowing just a tad but it is filled almost to the rim. The one for my sump is about half full and has no visible bowing. I have a bulkhead in the sump one and it has caused no problems either.

I emailed Rubbermaid concerning the Roughneck Totes and whether they were foodsafe. They replied that those totes aren't made from food grade plastic.
