Has anyone tried any RK2 protein skimmers?

I'm in the process of planning out a 1200+ gal build that will take place within the year. Tank will be 120x48x30 room divider viewable from front and back w/ starfire glass. There will also be 2-3 265gal bulk containers used to add additional volume to the system. I'm currently researching protein skimmers and stumbled across RK2, but haven't seen any reviews on here.

Here is a link to RK2's website:

and one for one of their vendors:

I know the skimmers might be a little overkill, but I want a reef w/ a "LOT" of fish. I figured I would ask here since it seems that their skimmers are really dedicated for larger systems.

TIA

Hey goofball,
RK2 make great commercial aquaculture products. Perfect for people like you and I! Look into a 25 PE or 50 PE skid system. It will include a skimmer with auto wash-down and dedicated venturi pump, a fluidized bed filter, an ozone generator and a controller. There is no need for the clear acrylic body skimmers, unless you're into spending money. I looked around and have seen some awesome Bermuda Aqatics systems but they go for a premium. RK2's website leaves just a bit to be desired..... Aquaticeco.com has some great info for you, just think COMMERCIAL. That way, all of the components are designed to work, together, for more than a year and a half. The commercial skids are the way to go IMO. Huge efficiency is the KEY here, pay upfront and get the best motors and pumps you can afford. I just thank the lord sharks and rays don't really like intense light - a KWH KILLER. Internal flow is a bummer too.

I knew Bob (the "R" in RK2) almost 20 years ago and he made great stuff then and I'm sure his large scale equipment now is even better. Back then we were using large 36" diameter skimmers around 10' tall, which were made entirely of acrylic and the occasional piece of PVC. At that time Bob didn't use acrylic tube, he heat formed large sheets and welded them together with PVC. I will tell you that those skimmers are still in use today, which speaks worlds for his manufacturing quality. We also had the same Ozotech units he sells today and they are solid as well if you want ozone.

RK2 made great stuff back then and still makes great stuff as far as I'm concerned. If you can afford it you can't go wrong.
