I was looking this morning at the live propagation for sale forum, and was looking at all the prices of the corals. I s it me, or are people asking ridiculous prices for frags of their corals, just like many aquarium stores do. Are you kidding me, 200,300,400 for tiny frags. HAS THE AQUARIUM HOBBY GONE NUTS?:spin1:

Yes, people think they can make money it in this hobby by selling high priced frags. They take picture of corals being blasted by blue light and tell you its something LE. Truth is go to any local fragswap and you can find anything that you see here for 20,30,40 dollars.Even the people with money to blow kick themselves when they see the same coral a months later for a tenth of the price . The only thing I pay up for are things that cant be frag'd like clams .

+1 it's turning into a business instead of a hobby.

Are we talking about SPS? If so, I haven't noticed an issue lately... prices seem to be the same as they were a couple years ago, or lower for some stuff. Only expensive SPS I've noticed lately are big colonies of aussie stuff.

My LFS lowered the price of most SPS frags to $10. All really nice stuff too. ORA frags are higher though.

I actually thought prices of the same frags ive seen a year ago are cheaper. I look at that forum almost everyday

As far as SPS go, no. Between my local club, my LFS, and RC it's surprising how cheap you can get just about any SPS frag.

As far as "LE" LPS go, yes, people are nuts.

Always some hot new frag with a new name that was developed to make somebody money. I'd rather wait until it shows up local and pay $10-30. You have been had if you paid more than $100!

Its not like this happened overnight. I've been in the hobby for 5 years and its been like that since I got in.

you cant hardly give sps away. It's a buyers haven for sps on here. I personally have gottern some insane deals on these here FS forums. I think it's great. the price for alot of "high end sps" has plumeted.

challices, different story. Almost makes me sick to my stomach.

Agreed on challices...They blow SPS out of the water in ridiculous prices!:spin3:

I agree and the funny thing is, sometimes I ask people if they just want to swap frags or pay it forward and they look at me funny. The equipment alone is crazy and now I have to sell a kidney for a frag. Heck, if you came to my house and saw something you liked i'd frag it and hand it over, expecting an exchange at some point of course.

Speedo, when can I drop by? ;)

I like selling frags to help fund the hobby. I don't look to charge ridiculous prices but rather fund equipment to invest into aquarium or new frags so I can later frag them!

And given some insane deals on the FS forum too. I picked up a frag pack from you, all quality stuff, some even came complete with those fancy names, for less than $20 a frag.

On the topic of chalices...you rarely see a tank with big chalice/ "high end" zoas/ large acan colonies. Instead you see tanks filled with a bunch of tiny frags, which look great when shot with a macro lens, but nowhere near as good as a tank full of mature SPS colonies. IMO of course, no offense intended to anybody with a tank filled with tiny chalices.

Yep that's exaactly how I roll! I sell stuff so cheap to the locals when we have a swap the comerchal venders are cussing me the whole time.

As far as lps goes yea it's totaly insane! I have some challices that I have seen sale on here for crazy prices that I got local for resonable trades. For instance I have a 8 eye tyree four color watermelon that I traded a few tyree montis for. I have seen the same challice sell on here for $600 INSANE!!!!

IMO, some Chalices that are sold for $50-$60 a frag is a very fair price if it looks very nice. Like this MT Hear Breaker Chalice that I have(this is a frag I sold not too long ago, I've got a mother colony which is where this frag came from) And, the Chalice is grown/picture was taken under 150 watt HQI 14k Phoenix bulb that runs 8 hours a day, no supplemental light/actinics either.

i agree 1000%. i have been in this hobby for 15 years and have never seen prices so out of wack! Its to the point now where i dont even bother clicking any of the FS threads on here if the title says.."LPS, chalice, favia or acan"...its nice to see the prices of sps coming down though!
