Have a leak, need some help.

I know I havent posted here in awhile. But I need a little help, my tank has gotten a small leak near the top. So I either need to replace the tank or get the leak sealed. Since its near the top I figure getting it sealed will be pretty easy. But I really have no idea how to get it done.
The tank is a Nanocube 28. So unless I move everything to the front part of the tank, the water cant be lowered to get the section to stay dry to seal for however long it needs to be sealed. I also have no idea what kind of sealant to get and use on it.

Any suggestions or help?

Where are you located? Do you need somewhere to keep some of your stuff till you can get the tank fixed?

sorry to hear this. I'm not 100% on how you could reseal it while their still stuff in the tank. I'd imagine you'd have to empty it to remove all the silicone along that seam but I really don't know for sure. I'd also think that having the pressure of water on an already leaking tank can't be good. I know from an automotive standpoint (which the silicone is different) you do not try to add new silcone to exsiting silicone as it won't seal properly, I think I've read the same regarding aquariums.

I do know alot of the LFS's carry smaller tubes of aquarium sealant but that some of the stuff at Home Depot or Lowes is doable, I just forget off hand what it is you have to watch for, I think it's the anti-mildew stuff that's not good.

found another thread on RC saying the GE Silcone I: Window and Door is okay but the GE Silcone II is not. and no mildew repellent stuff. I pretty certain the GE I window and door is what i've used in the past for my sumps but I don't have an empty or parital container around to confirm.

Leak?

Leak?

How close to the top of the tank is the leak? As long as you can clean the leaky silicone area and reseal it without getting wet you should be good ..UNLESS you have a hospital tank or can pick up a cheap 20 or 30 gallon somewhere....:fish2:

Its pretty much right at the top of the tank. Its the silicone on on the rim. The tank needs to be drained anyways as I need to relevel the tank. It seemed to have settled off a bit since I've had it. Which is probably why it started leaking.

I used to have a few tanks around the house but not anymore. The benefit is I only have 1 fish now so I just need a tank that can hold the corals. I'm hesitant to let someone sit my corals since the ones on rocks are infested with hair algae. I've been needing to replace my light for awhile and the hair algae has gotten out of control.

Well I just now need to hold out til the later part of the week. My Fiance and I have been debating about upgrading to the LED hood for the nanocube and just decided to bite the bullet this morning and buy the entire kit.

I appreciate the offers of help that I got, but this only ended up being a few hundred more than buying a new LED hood.

The leak was in an area that water from the tank didnt touch. Meaning that the leak was somewhere in the tank and somehow slipping down to where the silicone was leaking at and dripping.

Oh i see... be honest now, you waited till she wasn't looking and cracked the tank uh? "honey.. we need an upgrade..err replacement now" ;)

My garage had several tanks in it for awhile til I was told to get rid of them..

But it seems that every time I change to a different tank for one reason or another I have some losses. This time I lost a monti, my fiances clam, I might be losing my other monti. Thats what I can tell.

I tested the water and everything seems fine. I'm going to take a water sample to a LFS and get it tested for the stuff I dont have and see whats wrong.

I lose fish everytime I move tanks. It stinks. This move, I lost a firefish, filefish and a sixline wrasse.

Let this be a lesson to me to make sure my refractometer is calibrated. I was reading .007 higher than what the one at Wetpets was reading, and with mine calibrated now, its reading .005 or so higher than what I was reading before.

So there is a good chance there was a salinity and probably a bit of a temp swing during the move and it shocked the **** out everything thats ****ed/dying/dead.
