Have Some Spare Tanks, Thinking About Breeding

I have a 40 breeder tank as well as a 20 gallon long tank. I do realize that it will be a year or two, but I have a pair of B&W ocellaris clowns that are 4 months old. They really aren't a pair per say, they have just got into working out who is going to be dominant with some little bickerings after feeding. One has gotten slightly larger than the other, so I assume this one will become female(they were about 3/4 of an inch a month ago, slightly larger now). Before I decide to set the two tanks aside for breeding clowns, will it work to breed these two being they are siblings? I know with guppies you can go on for several generations before finding problems, but I am not sure with clowns. If I did breed them I would put the newly hatched fry into the 20 long(filled about halfway maybe) and get them past metamorphisis and move them to the 40 breeder to grow out to sell to fellow hobbyists. Just let me know if this will work!

breeding is alot of fun, but let me tell you, do it for the fun of it and not for extra money, cause in reality you dont get all this money as many think.. i have invested over 10k in my pairs and im not even close to that number in sales in over 3years,,, now if your looking to breed like a mad man and go all out then maybe itll be worth some money, but start off as it being fun and in a couple months after you have 5-600plus fry from one nest then you can decide if it's for you or not,,, i love doing it and if i sell any thats cool but im not looking to make a living off of it like some others do.... try it and see what i mean! good luck to your decisions and hope you have fun doing it!!!your plans seem good but watch out transfering all those babies cause they can die instantly of shock from one move it you do it early,.,,,,

The pair is eventually going into my 125 future reef. I am doing more for fun than money, if I wanted to do it for money I would be somewhat ahead. I only paid $60 for both, normally $60-$80 per fish at my LFSs. By time I get to the point of 5-600 fry eggs, I won't be able to raise the babies, college will keep me from setting up tons of tanks for the batches. Before transferring, they will be about 2-3 weeks after metamorphosis to ensure they are healthy.

It will most likely take longer for them to spawn in a reef tank with other fish.

I am okay with that, the time will give me plenty of time to research and get cultures going. Feeding 3-4 times per day will help the two I have grow I would think.

I've been reefing for years and just started breeding this past Summer. I started with 6 pairs. One was a proven spawner and one of the other pairs has since started spawning. I would recommend taking it slowly and perfecting the day to day mechanics such as rotifer culture and water quality maintenance. Also, I learned a lot about each pair through simple observation. This has helped in assessing their needs.

Depending on the actual age of those fish when you got them, your probably looking at around a year before they reach maturity and can start spawning. Gives you plenty of time to do your research and learn about culturing rotifers ;)

BTW, do papa John and grandma Poukie know that you are posting outside the lounge? :D
