Have You Checked out CA Aquariums in Reseda Recently?

Hey Guys,

The wife and I went coral wandering today. We dropped into CA Aquarium in Reseda. The shop is looking great. They have multiple tanks of nice looking large sized frags. The selection is wide and diverse. Definitely something for every kind of collector.

Frags were mostly mid range to high end stuff, with lots to pick from. The zoas and polyps looked huge and happy. They had some gorgeous fungias. And he has a couple of mushrooms that even I was tempted to pull out the wallet for.

They have a beautiful display tank. The installation is gorgeous and the coral collection in the display tank is nice as well. We spent about an hour chatting with Austin, and he was friendly and informative. We walked out with a couple of nice pieces.

While we were out and about we headed to another 'Coral' vendor in the area. We wandered the store and several sales people said Hello which was nice. However, when one of the sales people came up to us the situation changed.

The wife and I have been looking to replace a bright orange Coco Worm we lost in our last crash. We asked the salesman if he had an Orange or Yellow Cocoworm. The salesman told me, that Coco Worms don't come in Orange or yellow, that they only come in pink or red stripes. I smiled and said no I was looking to replace a solid yellow one I had. He told me I was wrong, they don't come in solid colors and that I must have had a Yellow Feather Duster.

I laughed because telling me I'm wrong about something I owned is funny on one hand, and is just rude on the other hand. The wife saw that I wasn't laughing because this was funny. So wife chimed in saying it was a Coco worm because it had two heads. Pretty astute for a fish geek's wife. I don't remember the exact words, but the salesman said something to the effect of - No, you're wrong, you had a feather duster.

I smiled, said a polite 'Thank You' and we turned and walked out.

Who do you think is right.... A rude *&^%$ at the fish store, or my wife....

Even if he was right he was wrong IMO...but he was wrong. I would email him the picture of your yellow coco worm:). That is beautiful.

I have heard a couple of people say good things about CA aquariums. I need to check it out.

By the way, Is the fish in your avatar pic a purple masked angel? I have been looking for one of those.

P.S. - this is from Live Aquaria- "The Hard Tube Coco Worm, also known as the Hard Tube Feather Duster, Protula Tubeworm, or Hard Tubeworm, has a crown that can be white, yellow, orange, pink, or red. The radioles may be banded or patterned. Younger Hard Tube Coco Worms have bi-lobed crowns, while the crowns of older individuals are spiraled."

Wow, CA Aquariums was my go to store back in my teens and twenty. Worked on weekends for fish with Eddie? and his boys. It went so downhill as the area did. Glad to hear it has rebounded and will have to go and take a look.

As for the other store, I'd put my guess on Vivid.

Post the store and we can have all SoCal reefers call them and ask if they have yellow coco worms in stock.

Rik, do you remember when California Aquariums was on Ventura Blvd in Studio City? THAT was a long time ago.

Dang if you find a yellow one, let me know that's sweet. I have a standard non coco yellow feather duster which is nice but not as nice.

Oigimsar - That is a Venustus, or purple masked angel. I have at least a pair and possibly a trio in my tank currently. They are beautiful fish, definitely on the shy side - which is why I am not sure if I have 2 or 3. I've had them for awhile now and I think they are a beautiful fish.

Rik - I think this CA Aquariums is an entirely different entity. Owned by Austin and Elliott who also have a service company in addition to the store. If you have a reef tank of any caliber I think they will definitely have some pieces for any hobbyist. As for the other store I'm not going to name names - But if your in the West Valley I think CA Aquariums will be a more enjoyable visit.

CoralNerd - If I come across another yellow or orange one It's coming home with me - That's a guarantee of at least 7-10 days of being in the wife's good graces!

Thanks, Dave. Do you knew someone who carries them locally?

Dave, Reseda Bl south of Sherman Way? That's the Ca Aquarium I'm referring to. There was another store almost directly across the street called West Coast Aquarium. I know Eddie sold it back in the mid to late 80's.

Kent, I don't. I remember Marks tropical fish in Studio City

Oigimsar/Steve,

They aren't a fish that are regularly seen. They are deep water and a bit reclusive. They don't have a very high success rate in captivity. I think for them to do well a tank has to be extremely matured and well established with a ton of pods, sponges and fauna for them to naturally feed off of. It took a long time for mine to take prepared foods.

Before 'trying' one (or three) you should definitely read up on the Venustus angel in the Fish Forum. Lot of people sharing experiences with them.

I remember going in to a Reef LFS a few years back, where the location was hard to find, and the parking lot was somewhat closed in, if that makes sense. I remember going in there and thinking it was simply a converted warehouse. This may be the same one?

On another note, as someone that works customer service, telling someone flat out that they are wrong is a horrible practice. There are other means to try to speak to your patrons, and this wasn't one of them. My place of employement is high on standards and it is drilled in to us. Every time I go shopping, it is more and more apparent why they take this strong line of training with us because some people simply do not know how to treat the customer.

That is Mark's. He is located on Ventura Place. Between Laurel Canyon and Ventura Blvd. Parking has always been a problem there. I worked there in 1981. Now THAT is a long time ago!

Just stopped by today, both austin and eliot are extremely helpful and knowledgeable! Their display tank and selection of coral are awesome!

Hah that's awhile ago. We probably spoke back in the day lol

Dave, that looks like a coco worm. Since it doesn't exist you've obviously photoshopped a feather duster! :lolspin:
