Having trouble with PINK SPS

When i get pink SPS they seem to lose colour. The bright pink turns more purple or reddish. this has happened to most of my birdsnests and stylo. Is keeping Pink any different that other colours. Greens, blue purple are all fine.

tank is 48x20x20
I have plenty of flow.
All T5 lighting. 3 blue plus, 3 aqua blue, 1 fiji purple. getting 500 PAR where these corals are

Alk - 8-9
P04 - 0.03 (hanna)
calc 420
N03 - 0

Any ideas anyone

thanks

Aaron

Have you tried switching the order of your bulbs?

I think you should swap an AquaSun or 75/25 for one of those AquaBlues.

.03 phos is pretty high...

I would say that is actually on the low side ;)

There are certain colors that work better with different spectrum of lighting. Aren't fiji purple designed to bring out more reds?

I've taken hot pink corals that were VERY washed out from tanks that run heavy actinics or only 20k's and placed them under 10k's and they changed pink pretty quickly.

Could be water conditions, but I am very familiar with the tanks they came from and their colors are and were much better than mine with the exception of the pink corals.

They like bright white light IMHO

How close are they to the Fiji? Under my 2 x Fijis, one pink looks great, but one pink looks dusty rose, and the tank it came from (400W Reeflux 12K on Coralvue) the mother colony was more hot pink... While the Fiji has a lot of red, it also has a lot of blue, which maybe a factor...

Todd, That is only something that us freaks that measure by hanna understand. I am happy when I am .05 :)

I agree, the more actinics and bluer lighting you have the harder it is to get pinks, atleast for me. I run 2x250 14k Phoenix Mh and have almost no pinks. Go for the lower kelvin bulbs.

 !!

(truth be told I still haven't put out for a Hanna yet... I learned from my last Zeo tank that the Hanna was a waste. Salifert says zero, algae won't grow, corals will and show great colorâ€"who needs to know how low your PO4 levels actually are? .02, .04, .06â€"the colors were still there! And pay $200 to boot! Naw, not with this economy... I keep hearing that the Elos PO4 test kit is as accurate at the Rowa/D&D, may try that for $28...! One of the great things Zeo has taught me is to observe and watch and trust the corals more than the test vials...)

i would imagine if the hot pink coral came from a tank with bright MH lighting, there is not much you can do unless you get the same light. T5s just don't have the intensity in my experience. they will grow and thrive just as well under T5s, but color will not be the same. i had eight T5s over my tank but nothing compared with 2 400w MH in lumenbright reflectors when it comes to intensity.

in my experience, corals that are hot, light colored under MH lighting, turn darker under T5s. and corals that are deep, dark colored under MH turn pastel under T5s.

lighting is very different from tank to tank.

Pinks and reds were miserable for me under the Phoenix's as well. Biggest drawback to that bulb...!

I agree with Madadi. It is hard for me to achieve that color too. Im currently running 20k ushio. I have tried phoenix and hamilton 14k.

Im thinking to add couple supplement T5 to boost my red & pink.

I have to agree here. I forked out $250.00 for the Hanna and case/kit and with a +/- .04 variable what good is it really if you're trying to dial in you phosphate numbers? .04 could mean .00 or .08. Pfffft! What tests are more accurate than this?

Thanks everyone. Its time to change bulbs so do you reckon i should replace an aqua blue with a daylight or something?

the pink corals are directly under the FIji bulb.
