Hawaii Photography Dilemma

I'm going to Kona in May. I've got a Nikon D90 as well as a Canon A720IS with underwater housing. I plan on doing a lot of snorkeling as well as some hiking. I'll have a rental car. My dilemma is what to do with my SLR while I'm snorkeling. I know that car break-ins are common at many popular Hawaii tourist destinations, so I don't want to leave it in my car. What can I do? I believe there are waterproof camera bags, but I'm not sure how reliable they are. Buying a housing for the D90 would be great, if only they didn't cost $1500+.

I'd go with the trunk. Put it in before you get where you're going and don't open the trunk when you get there. Really not alot you can do.

I was going to say the same thing. Keep it in the trunk. Hide it under some towels or something. Out of sight out of mind.

Call your insurance agent. You might be able to buy a short term policy for it. Then stick it in the trunk.

All of my gear is under a separate policy. I can't imagine having to replace my whole bag without it.

some cars even have that "well" under the mat in trunk for the spare. Stick it under there, and like people said do it way before you get to the parking area so no one see's you stash it.

Pretty good advice offered here. When my wife and I went back in 2007 I planned the days I was taking my DSLR rig out and about. Any other days it was locked up at the condo and my pocket camera was with me. Maybe not the most effective plan...there were times when I wanted the bigger camera...but it worked for us.

Thanks for the advice all. I've contacted my insurance company to make sure I'm covered in case the car does get broken into.

Yeah, that's an option, but I have a feeling I'll be doing road trips involving snorkeling and hiking in the same day. I'd hate to drive 40 miles to go snorkeling, then have to drive back to get my camera, then drive somewhere else to go hiking.
