Hawaiian Feather Duster

I bought a Hawaiian Feather Duster from Kermit's before the last meeting. I placed it at the bottom of the tank in about medium flow. It was doing great until I slowly starting changing the alkalinity. It started partially coming out and then dropped it's crown. It is now coming way out of it's tube. I did use a small burst of water from a turkey baster to get it to go back in. Should I let it leave the tube and possibly build another?

some things in life are not meant to be understood... just accepted....

That's what I tell my wife when I am explaining myself, but I only get to see more of my shop in time out.

IME if it tosses it's crown and then leaves it's tube, it's on it's way out... :(

Looks like you are right. This will end up being my third confirmed kill. Hopefully I don't set a record. I'll try to monitor things better and try to keep losses to a minimum.

Someone wise once said, "que sera, sera." Good luck with yours.

I've had Feather Dusters "lose their head", then weeks later, POOF!

They were back!

Sorry you lost yours. Bummer.

mine has ditched its crown 4 times in the last year it allways grows one back, but i have had some in the past that didnt make it

may be a bad time to ask but have you guys ever had a coco worm?

It would be even more depressing if a $60 worm committed suicide. They are pretty and I have wanted one, but now I am gun shy. I'll wait and make sure all parameter are perfect and consistent before trying again.

yep, and had the same experiences with them as feather dusters..
i've kept them without incidence and them i've had others toss their crown then regrow it or abandon their tube and die, or die and then float out of the tube... not sure which comes first...

Hey here's a question: Just last night we were looking at our feather duster.

His tube is like 5" long, but over the past several weeks, the Sleeper Goby (sand sifter) has taken it upon himself to bury the Duste4r.

Now, only a 1/2" of tube is exposed and the balance is buried under the sand bed. He still pops out and spreads his fan, but should I be concerned??

(He's really quite buried and hunkering down!)

marty that is a good question...

sleeper gobies are notorious for covering corals but i never thought about one covering a featherduster. i'm not sure how it would react to being covered up, i think it might get smothered..
