Hawaiian Flame Angelfish

Just wanted to share:

I had asked my LFS to let me know when they got their Flame Angelfish in. I got a notice that they got in an order of flame angels and I figured I would mosey over there and check them out tomorrow. But then they sent a notice that they had a single 'true' Hawaiian Flame Angel, so I hopped in my car and headed out there. The other Flames they had all looked REALLY nice. But I just couldn't resist the "rare" Hawaiian one that is now acclimating in a bucket next to my QT. Almost twice the price, but worth it to me considering that flames aren't very expensive anyway. I will post a picture later.

Here is the pic as promised (I don't know if it is quite this red in person, but definitely close)

OMG lets not go over this again!!!! It honestly depends on the fish. Some fish pick at corals and some don't. Its a game of luck.

And time. Some start out well behaved and wake up one morning and the world has changed.

50-50 on safety, as we ALWAYS say around here. Some are fine, some nibble but don't damage, some are the terminator!
Beautiful Flame!

there is a difference with hawaiian flames? how so?

Besides the extra red (and less orange), the other differences are the bars are thinner and have a slightly different pattern. Also the tips of the dorsal and anal fin have less of the blue as the red goes farther back.
Mine looks like the top picture here which is a better picture than I took: http://glassbox-design.com/2010/red-hawaiian-flame-angel/

Yes, it is questionable about reef safety. Yes, they can change their mind. Yes, they might leave everything alone until you put in something they decide they like. Yes, I worry a little bit about my anemone, but my clowns should help there. Yes it is worth it to me.

Hawaiian's are rare because as a tourist spot, Hawaii has some strict guidelines about exporting fish.

It ate a little bit, but I am considering sacrificing one of my live rock to the QT for it to graze on. But only my large rocks seem to have algae on them. Might be time to chisel off a piece.

5 weeks, 6 days to go in QT unless I need to treat it and the clock starts all over again :D

Dolphin is always great :). Sure sounds like they got a lot of cool stuff in today. I just wish there were a couple flame wrasses, too.

Yeah, flame wrasses are cool.

I was actually impressed this time around. There was a new guy there. Well, I assume he is new because I don't remember seeing him there, but I could be wrong. He actually asked me some good questions about my tank since he didn't know me (I think the other guys recognize me). Is it established, what size is it, etc. I actually feel better about an LFS when they ask those questions rather than just hand you over an animal.
