Do you miss the mainland at all?

Every waking second.....but I'm originally from Washington, if I'd been born/raised here it would probably be different.

I am working out the details of the BBQ... (well, I should say my wife is). I am pleased to say there are about 14 people that will be in attendance!

I am wondering if you guys want to make an official club? Maybe we could kick that idea around on this thread? or start a new one?

O.K. gotta question for ya: I have Orbit PC lights on my 120... gives me only 260 watts of light (but for some reason looks more intense than the VHO's I had on my reef in Seattle) what anemone could thrive under this light AND host my two baby perc's?

Do you guys visit WetWebMedia? a great resource!

I should be getting my Lifereef LS-150 soon... Im stoked, I have been waiting almost two months.

From what I've beent told, PCs are not enough for an anemone, expecailly a Long Tentacle Anemone...but that's only what I have heard...sorry...all the people that I know that have anemones are running Metal Halides...

Where would or could you get an anemone anyway? Remember I am new here to Hawaii.

Glad to see you all networking on this. I'm planning a move to Oahau in 08. But I can't leave my hobby behind here in Wa. I'll be bringing my 180 gal. with me.
How is the job market on the islands. My boss tells me the unemployment rate is very low on the islands. I am a bakery manager for Safeway and hopefully can get a transfer by 2008.

We don't have any large species of anemone that do well in aquariums, and it's illegal to import them.

There is one species of large intertidal anemone, and a medium sized sand-dwelling species, but neither survive for long from what I've heard.

Sand-dwelling species, are those the anemonies for sale at Modern Pets?

Yes, those anemones are Heteractis malu. Usually found in Kaneohe Bay in about 20 feet of water. One of the natural hosts of clarkii clowns (but obviously not in Hawaii). Like most clown-hosting anemones, requires strong lighting and usually some feeding.

I've never tried keeping one before because none of my tanks had a sand bed deep enough ... :)

I have a H. malu in my 75g no special lights this far. I've had it a month and it is doing great as far as I can tell and research. I talked one of the guys at Modern (one of you probably know his name) and I placed my Malu in a rock near the top of the tank (gets floresent and Natural daylight) Over the month I have feed it brine and sliverside. It is growing and seems to be doing well.
We (ok, I, Alex's wife) had bought the Malu for our cube and Alex didn't like that idea. So for the time being we placed it in the 75 and has been there since. It has grown and is starting to lighten ( not bleaching) So far this malu is Healthy. We hope to get lighting for the 75 tank in the next month or so.
We had also found Anemones at the pet store out by us in Ewa. I have not seen any for awhile however in early summer they had three, deep (dark) red with green. They were pretty. Sorry I don't know what kind they were but they were good looking.

i know a place online that will ship to hawaii because i had ordered from there
but the chances of anemones surviving the trip will be very slim
i got zoos and some snails and stuff from them though

Those are Cladactella manni, a large intertidal anemone. You can find them in tidepools or under rocks near the shoreline, usually in rocky areas with lots of wave action. They get quite large - I've seen some that were almost 6' across. Because they're always found in high-surge environments I imagine they'd need a lot of water motion to stay happy in an aquarium.

So the malu seems to happy in the rockwork? Hmmm .... maybe I may need to revisit getting one after all ... :)
