You don't need a computer or aquanotes (software) to get the Controller to function.

I am going to get the serial cable because there is a free version of aquanotes and I have an old laptop that I can use. Check www.neptunesys.com for more info.

To simplify it for the NOOBIE, if you get the package it will work right out of the box. All the other things are I guess you can call it toppings of the ice cream.

If you want to hook this up to your computer/laptop you must have the serial cable, I remember seeing somewhere that the pin layout isn't a standard NULL or straight through so I suggest get the cable here.

AquaNote Lite is FREE to download and use as Sid700 mention.

If you're not going to do some crazy computing, logging and just want to simply do simple automation with your system the package is enough to do everything and then some for any average reefer.

The Neptune site says that the cable is 6' long, I hope it is.

In order to connect the AquaController to a PC, a serial connection is required. This serial cable is 6 foot long with a minidin 8 connector (plugs into the AquaController) on one end and a female DB9 connector on the other. If a longer serial connection is required, a 'straight through' serial externsion cable can be purchased from your local computer store."

dude you're jumping to conclusion. The 3ft cable is the one from digikey stripped on 1 end. :mad2:

yes,they're single use,they're said calibrate once every 3 months.i still have left over from last year .it's have no date on the packet,i guess it's last long time.

I downloaded the ACJr manual and it says the following:

"pH Calibration
Because of the variability in pH probes and the fact that they change over time, it is best to calibrate the AquaController Jr’s pH circuitry. A two-point calibration scheme is used to obtain good results. <B>For the most accurate results it is best to use pH 7.00 and 10.00 solutions for salt water and pH 4.00 and 7.00 for fresh water.</B>"

Makes sense because you want your calibration window to capture the pH you're measuring.

hey all, just ordered from the last groupbuy of the ac jr.. (this one is a better price, by the way..). made the same noob mistake of not ordering the serial cable and calibration fluids. got them from premium aquatics, but if you can get with your package that would be easier.

ordered the serial cable, its listed both on the PA and neptune website as being 6', but when i measured mine it came out to 10' (just measured last week), so maybe they are generous..

about calibration fluids, on the neptune manual (you can download the pdf from the neptune aquacontroller website) it says to use ph 7 and ph 10 to calibrate for saltwater applications and ph 4 and 7 for freshwater.

they say calibrate monthly, most people i've heard from calibrate 1-2 times a year and seems like its fine..

so, to make a long story short.. get a serial cable and some packets of ph 7 and 10.. you can also find the calibration packets locally at aquarium concepts in hayward and i'm sure other places for under $2 for a single use packet..
