Heading to Cancun in 3 weeks...

...and I was wondering if anyone has any snorkeling advice for the area. We are staying at the southern end of the hotel strip and are planning on snorkeling as a family as much as we can. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Make a trip to Puerto Morales, it is located in the Riviera Maya south of Cancun. They offer 2 snorkeling drops in the same trip. Water is 6 to 8 feet deep. Great snorkel site in a protected area(state park)

I have been to the Riviera Maya twice and before heading there based our decision on where to stay on diving. The Cancun area offers very little in diving and thereby likely even less for snorkeling. You'll need to get to Playa del Carmen or south to hit the good stuff. Akumal is great as is Cozumel. The reef that runs up from Belize hits Akumal and then shifts towards Cozumel.
