Heading to Sacramento

So I've just learned that we'll be moving from Denver to Sacramento for one year. I've mainly kept nanos thus far--was thinking of doing a pico in Sacramento since we won't be there that long.

I know nothing of the city but am starting to research the climate. Seems like you guys are quite warm out there. Is a chiller a must on most saltwater setups? I know a lot depends upon ambient room temperature, etc, but just wondering if most of you have chillers.

Only the smart reefers run chillers in this area. Well, them and Mike B. I would highly reccomend one.

i dont run a chiller for my system but thats only due to the fact that my house doesnt go much above 80 degrees (hidden between 2 buildings) but would highly reccomend one because the summers out here can push 115(in Davis at least which is only a 10 min drive down the freeway)

Depending on the pumps you use and the lighting that is ran, 80 degrees usually spells MAJOR trouble. If my house reaches 80 w/o a chiller my tank reaches 86 and my SPS turn the most lovely shade of white.

WHITE! Man that is super rare! Can I get some frags!:eek1:

I would recommend them as well, unless you try getting a few ice packs and alternating them in your sump/aquarium to keep it cool... I got tired of doing that so I got smart.

I don't run a chiller, instead I run fans across the sump, and tank water never got over 82 degrees last summer. The flip side is that I had lots of evaporation... more than a gal. a day.
If you want worry free and want to leave for a weekend or a week vacation, get a chiller.

I also don't use a chiller and just run fans when needed. I wouldn't say a chiller is a must unless you don't use your ac.

No chiller for me either. I keep the house temperature at about 75 degrees and use fans when the lights come on. Both tanks run at a steady 77-78 degrees.

Me too. But I run my AC at 78. The tank never gets above 80.

The key is fans and a ATO to replenish evaporation.

Good luck!

Like most people said - a chiller is not absolutely necessary. Many people keep their tank in the low 80s with a fan and lots of evaporation. On really hot days, people sometimes cool off their tank with ice in a Zip Loc bag.

When you get to the Sacramento area, check out MARS. There's a lot of great members here.

I live in Davis and don't run a chiller. I also have some MH but I also run a fan over and top off daily or every other day. Temp doesn't get above 80. It really just depends on you and how warm/cool your place stays during the summer

I ran fans alone for a while and just wasn't comfortable with the 5 degree or so swing, plus the evap was crazy, especially since I don't run an auto top off. Decided to be done with it and got a chiller as soon as I found a deal on one on the craig list.

fishwood: Get ready for the climate. Summers can be relatively hot here.

How are the Sacramento LFS's? I'm guessing with a community as active as this one, there are some nice ones around.

we have some great lfs'....7 that are regular stops; 1 when you got have a lfs fix and one that is up and coming.

115 degrees? Oh boy, I may have spring fever now but I'm going to be craving snow come this summer.

In a rare summer and only for a week at most, but 102 to 103 every summer for a week or so. Nice thing, is that Tahoe is less than 2 hours so skiing is close by.
