Hi everyone, as you may have read some of my post I hope to be getting a new yellow tang. But honeslty I read and heard so many horror stories of ick, black ich, red spots, and erosion, I am almost scared to get one. Does anyone have any positive stories of yellow tangs they have kept that have never gotten sick?

I've had tangs and had no health problems, just a couple w/ attitudes.
Make sure he's put in last if you can, they don't seem to like newcomers.
Your tank is decent size for him, I wouldn't be afraid to add one.

Before you get one, I would look into start up a qt tank and put him in hypo before you put him into your main tank. This will ensure if you qt him for atleast 5-6 weeks then he will most likly go into your main tank disease free.

Thank you for you positive reply. I really do want one, they are my dream fish. I can see it in my tank already. I actually got the 75 to accomodate a yellow tang.

Question for Andrew

Should I do hypo even if there is no sign of disease? What if the tang was in copper at the petstore? Could I just quarantine without treatment. Also how often should I feed in quarantine since there would be no grazing opportunity?

I have 3 yellows without issues. Yellows are actually one of the hardier tangs. You do not have to hypo unless you see signs of ich. Copper in LFS is usually not high enough to kill the parasite. Just enough to put in in remission. Hypo needs to used for a min of 4 weeks after the last signs of ich are gone. I would put a small piece of nori in the QT daily. I have found it better to attach it to a rock with a rubberband etc instead of a clip. I do use clips in the main.

My yellow and blue tangs are both in great shape. fat and happy! very neat fishes to observe

I agree on the QT tank, as long as you are responsible when adding a fish they should be fine.

Feed nori (as mentioned by Brenden) daily, or twice a day half the size.

I have a hippo tang and a yellow tang in my tank and both have always been very healthy. We had a slight outbreak of ich one time in 6 years, but I think the overall good health of the fish helped them overcome it with no chemical treatment. I feed nori every day, but soak it in vitamins 3 times a week. This along with a varied diet keeps them healthy and fat.

for spoiled cats: When your fish broke out that one time was it all of your fish or just your tangs? Did you have to treat all the fish?

It was just the tangs that I saw spots on. I have a cleaner shrimp and a cleaner wrasse in my tank, and I didn't chemically treat the ich at all. I guess the shrimp took care of it. But there were never more than a few spots on the fish at one time, so it wasn't a bad outbreak. If the fish are basically healthy, many times they can overcome this without treatment. If you have a bad outbreak though, you should definitely quarantine and treat.

IMO i wouldn't do any treatments in a QT tank unless they start to show signs of deiseese. then move them to a hospital tank and go from there. no sence in strssing out the fish more.

just don't buy your YT from Petco and you should be fine, buy from a dealer you can put a hold on the fish and observe over a week if you're really concerned. I never had 1 problem w/mine until I dosed vodka and killed everything, but that's another story.
