We had 10 FP's at 70 days in a 10g growout, Thursday morning they where acting funny. I had a busy day at work so we did a %50 water change and fed them, I had my kids check on them through the day. At 5:30 one passed away and by the time we got home around 9 all 10 had gone. I checked the water and the only thing wrong was at the time the PH looked high.
Salinity was 1.023
Nitrate and Nitrite negligible, same with Ammonia.
We use a multi-test strip, it showed the PH was very high (and not the next day), but that based on my reading would explain the way the fish where shaking in the morning.
I run sand, two live rocks, a protein skimmer, a bio filter (with floss, air powered). I also keep two snails and three very small peppermints in the tank. I do water changes about 3 times a week.
I've been feeding Cyclopeeze, both frozen and freed dried. And color flakes as a treat. Up to this point they have been happy and very very active.
When we got home the water was a little cloudy, the peps looked fine. I took some of the water and put it in a container, then did a water change again. Removed the baby's and got drunk. Friday I took a sample of water to the LFS and everything checked out fine, the only thing done differently was that my son fed them a little Formula One green flakes before we got home.
I'm at a total loss, if the PH was spiked, then the water in the jar should have stayed spiked. But it tested fine. The only other thing worth mentioning was that the skimmer had an orange output.
My suspicion was that the kids where overfeeding, and it ran the tank out of buffer.
We are baffled, the peps are still doing fine. I picked up an HOB, with carbon and have been running that. I've checked all my water and then tank again and the parameters look fine...
Any ideas?, starting to wonder if we can actually pull this off.
I've started planning a system for the garage that will have a 100g buffer in the form of a refugium. Not sure what else to do...
