so the water in my tank is 81.5 degrees F. The heater is set at 72 I just turned it down to 70.
The lights are dual 96watt 36" power compact satellite fixture.

Can they give off tha much heat ? How do I cool it down short of leaving the lights off all the time =/

You forgot to mention room temp. It will have a big impact on your tank temp. Powerheads and other pumps will add heat as well. A clip on fan is a good investment. Aim it in the sump if it wont fit under the hood.

What brand heater? I have a hydor that is in the spare parts bin. It was set to 75 and kept the tank at 84. Changed to a stealth and all is well now.

ah shoot.. not sure what the brand is.. it's just a plain heater i bought from the pet store a while ago.

it is a bit warm in here usually about 26 degrees but i'm fixing that pretty soon by putting up curtains.
maybe that will help.

Why would you list all of your temps in F and your room temp in C. The conversions hurt americans heads :)
