Heater Broke Corals dying....

I came home to a smell of something burning and looked in my sump and the heater was sparking. It had broken (no idea how) I immediatly unplugged the heater and did a water change. The fish seem fine but many of my corals do not look good..... Is there anything else that I can do to help save my corals?? Thanks in advance

What is the temp of the tank? Did it go up or down? Can you do another water change and try and correct the water temp, if it is high, try and fill some ziplock bags with ice and put them in the sump. Also try putting a fan on the tank.
If it is low, do you have another heater, or is there a local reefer near you that will lend you one for a few days until you can get a new one?

Good luck

What kind of heater? Was it glass?

Sorry, I don't know what to tell you... maybe they will be fine once the temp is back up (my heaters have been unplugged for the past week b/c of the heat here).

I'm curious, though; did you have a GFCI or ground probe?

It was a glass heater and I have a heater to replace it. I did have a grounding probe, but i dont think that it could handle straight electricity pumping into the tank. My guess is that it did tissue damage to the corals.... But many of them are bleaching out :(

There is a chance that they will recover, just depends on how long the stray voltage was going into your tank. For now, just make sure to keep your water in check, and it wouldn't hurt to run a polyfilter for a while.

Not too long ago I had a stray voltage issue in my tank. A lot of my SPS bleached out, all but one made a full recovery.

another good reason to add a CFGI

and another reason to use a stealth heater. Kinda hard for a plastic heater to shatter. Good luck hope everything works out for you.

Why would you unplug your heaters? They have a thermostat in them that will turn the heater off once the desired temp is reached. No need to unplug.

Sorry, this advice is not good. The part of heaters that fails most often is the thermostat. If you want to be safe, get a ranco controller.

Agreed on the controller. I use the stealth heaters on my QT and backup for the main systems, and have found them quite reliable on their own. However, I run titanium tube only heaters from Finnex on my AC3 as the primary/secondary source of heating on the main system.

It's also a common recommendation to get some fresh carbon added to your system after a glass heater break.

I replace my heaters every so often so I havent had any troubles with the thermostat. I also now run a Rancho as I got it free when I bought a bunch for my reptiles. Dont think I would run a heater without one again.

Ya I am ordering a stealth heater so this does not happen again. Corals are beached but many seem to be making a comeback... Thanks to all who replied to this post, hopefully things will make a comeback or I might have to restock

...sorry, but I have to disagree. I know of two local reefers that this exact issue happened to, and both of them had the stealth heaters. BOTH of them caught fire and one of them blew into pieces. JMHO, but ALL heaters can fail. Adding a GFCI and a ground probe will help a ton.

Sorry about your situation bro, hope it recovers!
