Heater Broke in tank

The heater in my spartan 10 gallon broke. What do I need to keep it from killing the little bit that I actually have in this tank? Black crap everywhere in the sump. Going to walmart to get a new heater now. Be back soon.

that sucks..That happened to me once with a cheap glass heater..Someone here had his whole tank nuked from a broken stealth heater..I'd drain it and clean it since it's such a small system..

Well I did a 50% change, running carbon and cleaned out the sump. Probably going to end up tearing this system down as it has killed all the CUC and the pods(several thousand of them) I see a couple of Rics that are alive that will end up back in the 180.

Next question. Is the rock from this tank now contaminated with whatever came out of the heater? Any way to cleanse it? Sort of lost now.

um.....i believe i posted this in another thread....but according to my Mom, "better safe than sorry".

that sucks, Ryan. Good thing? NOT THE BIG BOY.

btw...ygpm somewhere else....lol.

I would run carbon, then do a 100% water change and then run new carbon.

I just broke a glass heater the other day (out of the tank)... now I remember why I like the titaniums.

Good luck!

good question!

is there anything inside a heater that can contaminate a system?

I don't think so.......
There are many components inside of the heater that can effect your water quality. I'd run some PolyFilter regardless.

Sorry to hear about it Ryan! What kind of heater was it... Stealth?

It's been awhile since I had a heater explode but (from what I remember) you basically end up with some electrical current, broken glass and exposed heating elements/componenets.

No gases, solids or liquids liberally released into the aquarium water and no contaminents- unless you're counting the livestock that may have died.

I think the rock would be okay to continue to use unless some type of contaminent got released by a heater into the water (system) which is highly unlikely (IME). If there's a type of heater that pollutes an entire aquarium when it explodes I'd like to avoid it........

Well, I'll bet not all heaters are created equal. He said he had "black crap everywhere" which, unless the color of the glass is black, is questionable...

black crap is (usually) fried electrical components or cooked livestock.

I'd still love to find out if there are brands of heaters that contain (possible) contaminents.
It would be kinda stoopid for a manufacturer to include something toxic in their heaters........

You're right, it would be. But, even children's toys are made with lead, so... :/

Don't electronics often contain several different metals in the circuitry? That would concern me. Perhaps polyfilter is the way to go since it is supposed to pick up any metals in the water.

I don't subscribe to a lot of beliefs regarding metals toxifying aquariums.
I've had all sorts of coins, nails, pins, coat hangars, magnets, Matchbox cars etc. soak in my aquarium(s) for lengthy periods of time and I don't think they've killed or harmed anything.

That being said, the stupidity of many humans never fails to surprise me and I don't doubt there's some manufacturer somewhere in the world putting something toxic in their heaters.

Sorry to hear just had my heater brake in my sump the day before u posted :( I didn't know until I went to adjust my power head and got shocked! Then checked the temp which was at 79 the night before was at 86 that morning! Mine was a stealth heater. Second one in 6 months that went bad! I know have a titaniam one "fingers crossed".
