Which of these two products is preferable, better quality, etc.? Anyone using one or something similar for controlling a heater? Any other suggestions or products?

Take that money and invest it for a good controller that will take care of the temp. I have RKE and it is wonderful. W/ your setup look at the RKL to see if it can do what you need.
