heater for my system

Yes, I use a Pro Heat 500w Titanium Heater for my tank. I originally bought two. Don't go cheap, if you haven't bought the heaters yet, buy the titanium heater. For around $50 They're more acurate and harder to break.

I agree - use a non breakable design like the titanium models. As for wattage - that largely depends on how stable the temp is in the area where the tank is kept. If the room gets very cold 500W may not be adequate, on the other hand if the room has minimal temp swings 250W should be fine. Thermodynamically, water holds a high calorie (heat) content liter for liter and is not prone to rapid temp changes compared to other liquids.

Definitely buy Titanuim. I found this out the hard way after crushing a glass heater..... they are more expensive but I cant recommend them enough.

If you run as SPS. You might not need a heater. In my 300 and now my 500 I don't even have a heater. Although a chiller is a must.... I run (7) external pump and (4) tunze 6200 and I still need more flow....

the sump and fuge are in the basement, but the basement is heated and didnt get cold down there at all the other week when the temps were in the low tens lol..... the house is pretty close to air tight it has an energy star rating..

ill look into a titanium heater just to be safe

Being a long time fish keeper I swear by ebo jaeger heaters. I haven't broke one in awile but have in the past. I have 2 250 watts at my office with 250 total gals and the sump is 150 gals. The sump is in the basement which is around 60 degrees. The two 250 watt heaters work fine. You may want to consider a neptune controller, I think they really work better than the thermostat on individual heaters.

good luck!
