Heater Placement

This is totally a newbie question. Where do you recommend to place the heater...in the tank or in the sump? If in the sump, where? Thanks for your help!

For most the point of the sump is to hide the filtration so most people put the heaters in there. You should put heaters in a decent flow area. Mine are where the overflows empty into the sump and one is in between the baffles before my return.

The answer though is you can put them anywhere as long as tank gets to your desired temperature. Hope this helps.

I have my heater in my skimmer section of the sump.

I have a temperature controller controlling my heaters.

I have my temp probe in the return section of the sump and my heaters in the section immediately after. That way the heaters heat the sump, then the tank before getting back to the temp probe. I did this to make sure I was taking the temp of the water coming from the tank.

With enough water flow, it really shouldn't matter as it's all being churned and warmed at pretty much the same rate.

One thing to add. I run an Apex and use two temperature probes. There is about a degree difference between the DT and the sump. Just keep this in mind when setting up how warm the heaters will run.

In the fuge section in the sump, it's the only one that has room. The probe for the temp control is in the return section.

Just wanted to chime in to add that my heaters go in the sump because my wife thought the thermometer light(s) were distracting from the fish.

after my original in sump heater failed on me without me noticing i decided to put its replacement on the back wall of the tank so I can keep an eye on it without leaving my chair!
i intend to place a heaterback in the sump sooner or later though.
