Heater Question

Do you guys have to set your heater lower then the temp you want? I have an all glass heater and i have to set it at 76 on the dial to get it to stay at 80 degrees with the lights on? Is this right? Shouldn't i be able to set it at 80 on the dial?

I know that certain heaters wont be calibrated properly. I spend the extra money and buy the titanium heaters, once I set them to say 80 it stays at 80. There is no guessing what the heather says from the tank.

It really is a matter of the quality of the heater in question. They ALL claim to be very good but sometimes, the amount you pay for it will make a difference. I find that my titanium heater is about the best of the ones that I've used and I have used many.

get a glass thermometer and test it against the heater in a gallon container then just remember what compensation is needed

I have never bought a heater that was calibrated properly. Before placing a new heater in a tank I place it into a large bucket of water and test it until I find the right setting to achieve the temp I am looking for. I learned the hard way by placing a new heater in a tank, setting it for 78 degrees and coming in later to find a tank at 90+ degrees!

i have to say that the top 2 heaters of choice for me are Won Brothers Titanium Heaters and then Ebo Jager (now known as Ehiem Jager)
