Hello all

I just wanted to say hello to everyone on this forum. I've been using Reef central for a while now, but I just discovered the GIRS home page (and this particular forum) in the last few days.

It's nice to see that there are a good number of active reefers in this area. The other clugs that I'm aware of around here (IAA & EIAA) seem to be really freshwater-centric and I just find marine tanks so much more interesting personally.

Does GIRS ever have meetings close to Cedar Rapids? I'm located in Marion.

Thanks

-Jason

Glad you found us! :D

Most of the "BIG" meetings are either in Iowa City or Des Moines area. We are starting to have other "smaller" meetings in various places, W-loo, quad Cities, etc...

Keep an eye here on the boards and on the webpage, that's where the meetings locations and times are usually posted.

Again welcome!

Why don't you tell us a little about your setup.

My Setup

My Setup

Thanks for the info.

I'm still very new at all this as I've only had my saltwater tank setup since May and I obviously have a lot left to learn.

Here's the current snapshot of my ever evolving system.

Tank: 125 All Glass
Lighting: Orbit PC 6x96 (4 x Dual Daylight, 2 x Dual Actinic)
Overflow: CRP 1200GPH with Aqualifter pump
Sump: Pro Clear Aquatics Wet Dry Filter
Skimmer: Built into Wet Dry filter
Main Pump: QuiteOne 4000
Refugium: 20H All Glass (Drilled)
Powerheads: 3 MaxiJet 1200's
WaveMaker: Red Sea Wavemaster Pro

~100 lbs of Sand
~100 lbs of Live Rock

My return is plumbed with PVC and slips between the main tank and the refugium (which gravity feeds back into the sump). I use a ball valve to control the flow into the refugium.

I just got the refugium added in last week and I've seeded it with a bit of Chaeto (thanks tuffy1845!).

Livestock:

5 Percula Clowns
3 Green Chromis
1 Yellow Tail Damsel
1 Royal Gramma
1 Lawnmower Blenny
1 Emerald Mithrax Crab
16 Hermits of various types and sizes
3 Turbo snails
6 Astrea snails + numerous babies
Many Many Many Stomatella snails
1 Tiny brittle starfish
Many pods, tubeworms, etc.

I don't plan to add any more fish, but I would like to up my snail count and add some biodiversity to my sand bed and refugium. I also would like to add any anenome soon as well.

Corals: (not much so far)

3 Green mushrooms
1 Brown polyp
1 Small colony of what I believe to be a small form of anthelia

Hows that for a little info? :)

Here are some photos I took today...

Welcome to GIRS, it's nice to see another semi-close reefer. We do a little bit of trading so If you ever need anything let us know.

Thanks! At this point you can see I really don't have much to trade, but I'm always in the market for stuff that's good for newbies like myself. If you have anything for sale that fits that bill, let me konw!

Lookin good so far! I like the small rock arrangment to the left, makes it look more natural and open. Once you have some coral around that area it will really stand out! I'm also in C.R if you ever need anything. Ryan

Hi Jason

Welcome to GIRS
I am fairly new here also, let me say this is a great group of reefers.
Everyone is so friendly and helpful.
This forum stays quite active also which is nice.

Your tank is looking good, take your time and learn from those who have made the mistakes already. Remember that most GOOD things in a reef tank never happen fast!
